Celebrated designer Donna Karan has entered into an exciting collaboration with famed American fashion photographer Deborah Turbeville on a special showcase organized by the brilliant Wapping Project to be showcased during London Fashion Week at Donna Karan’s flagship Conduit Street store.
The Wapping Project has organized the special exhibition of the photographer’s art in London that aims to blur the boundaries between more commercial fashion and fine art photography. Her work has been widely received in the fashion world and by some very powerful women – Jackie Onassis even commissioned her to photograph the unseen Versailles.
At the core of Turbeville’s work is the theme of tainted beauty, with many pieces featuring the more gritty and damaged faces of beauty – like the haunting facades of street women and faded aristocrats amidst their opulent surroundings.
The fashion photographer is known for seamless mending of poetic grace and cinematic vision, and has worked with iconic fashion figures like Karl Lagerfeld and Comme des Garçons on pieces to be displayed at Donna Karan. Also in the exhibition are her photographic essays for Harper’s Bazaar, W Magazine, and shoots for Italian, French, Russian, British, and American Vogue.
Turbeville, who rose to fame with her iconic Bathhouse series for American Vogue in 1975, will have her evocative exhibition – titled Deborah Turbeville: The Fashion Pictures – curated by The Wapping Project’s Jules Wright and on display at Donna Karan on Conduit Street, London for six weeks, starting September 8, 2011. All the works displayed in the exhibition will be for sale.
