Worth Avenue Renovations Continue In Palm Beach
by Ashley Butler

Phase II of Worth Avenue’s $15.8 million renovations began last week, as work commenced on the eastern portion of the avenue. After eight months of toil, most of the revamp was completed in November 2010. Burkhardt Construction of West Palm Beach rebuilt traffic lanes, sidewalks and landscape elements on the famed Avenue.
Architect Mark Marsh and designer Jorge Sanchez worked in tandem to add a clock tower, entrance piers, a living wall and a plaza with a fountain at Hibiscus Avenue. Phase II is more about follow-up work, and should only take about two or three weeks to complete.
Finishing touches such as uplighting of the clock tower and entrance piers, installing additional benches and creating planting beds are already underway. Workers will also be replacing sidewalks with new coquina rock from the Dominican Republic, refurbishing existing tile-and-marble fountains.
“I’m sure these improvements will just add to Worth Avenue’s regal look,” said Sherry Frankel, president of the Worth Avenue Association of businesses. “And there will certainly be no interruptions on the scale of last summer’s.”
The project deadline is October 31, 2011.
