Historic “West Side Story” Apartment Finally Sold
by Mary Nagle

After twenty months on the market, the alleged birthplace of the classic “West Side Story” has finally sold—at nearly half its original listing.

Apartment #54 at the Upper West Side’s legendary Dakota was first placed on the market by Indra B. Tamang in December 2009 for a modest asking price of $7.5 million. Tamang inherited the apartment from Ruth Ford after serving as her cook, butler and caretaker for 30 years.

However, this beautiful apartment was not exactly easy to get rid of. By February 2010, the price had been cut by twenty percent. A few weeks ago it finally sold for $4 million, despite the most recent asking price of $4.95 million.

Still, that’s not a bad profit turnover for Tamang.
