Audemars Piguet ambassador Darren Clarke is now the third of the luxury time brand’s ambassadors to win a golf Grand Slam tournament in the past 14 months with his July 17th win at the British Open, his first Major win. Preceding Clarke were Rory McIlroy with the US open 2011 and Graeme McDowell with the US Open 2010.
The fierce competition took place on the Royal St. Georges course along the Kentish coastline and – despite some difficult weather – the 42-year-old Northern Irishman finished three strokes ahead of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, both Americans. With four exceptional regular rounds of 68, 68, 69, and 70, Clarke took a firm lead on Friday and unrelentingly held onto it throughout the event, with his incredibly lightweight Audemars Piguet Royal Oak prototype in titanium on his wrist the entire time.
During his six years as an ambassador for the haute horology brand, Clarke has won 14 tournaments on the European circuit to date, with the last in Majorca last May. Although a seasoned Ryder Cup winner with four wins, he considers this week’s British Major win – Clarke’s 20th attempt – to be a crowning achievement in his career. “I’ve waited a long time for this victory and I’d be lying if I said I always believed I could make it”, he admitted. “But everything went like a dream this week. I felt instantly at ease on arriving here and I can’t remember having struck the ball so well, from tee to green.”
