Bottle Cap Opens This Week, Replaces Legendary Washbag
by Alexandra Delgado
This week marks the end of an era for Powell Street. The property that used to house community-renowned restaurant Washington Square Bar & Grill will re-open this Thursday, this time as Bottle Cap, Dane Boryta and wife Elizabeth Ferro’s casual American-style restaurant.

The Washbag began serving the San Francisco community in the 1970s, and was a popular meeting, eating, and drinking place until its doors closed in 2007. Despite a resuscitation attempt by Liam Tierman, the restaurant went under again after less than two years of being reopened.

With big shoes to fill, Boryta and his wife seem well prepared, both having been in the restaurant industry for many years. After working in a slew of San Francisco restaurants, the pair opened their own place in Massachusetts, which was open from 2001 to 2007. For the past three and a half years, Boryta was the executive chef at Sens while his wife worked for the San Francisco opera as the food and beverage manager. The two live just down the street from their new venture.
Joining the Bottle Cap crew are former Blue Plate chef Matt Sullivan and bar manager Peter Gowdy. Sullivan will be serving up ingredient-driven American cuisine while Gowdy pours from a list of nine revamped classic cocktails.
Bottle Cap will open for dinner starting July 7 to July 9th, and its regular lunch and dinner hours will begin the following week. Visit www.bottlecapsf.com for hours.
