Bangkok Named ‘World’s Best City’ 2011 by Travel + Leisure

Bangkok has been named by renowned U.S. travel magazine Travel + Leisure as World’s Best City as part of their World’s Best 2011 Awards issue. This is the second year in a row that Bangkok has taken the prestigious title as based on the votes of thousands of Travel + Leisure readers.

Despite the civil unrest the city had experienced last year with an unfavorable affect on tourism, it has snagged the number one spot from Florence, Rome, New York City, Istanbul, Cape Town, Siem Reap, Sydney, Barcelona, and Paris, in that order. According to Luxuo, the only other Asian city to make the top ten list is Siem Reap in Cambodia, which has attained a considerable tourist following – especially by those trekking the South East Asia backpacking trail – because of its closeness to the revered Angkor Wat temple.
