The Fabulous Fashion At The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic 2011
by Naima Sanowar

Over the weekend, I attended one of the summer’s most unique and glamorous star-studded events, the 2011 Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. Showcasing once again polo in New York City, a tradition that was reintroduced by Veuve Clicquot in 2008 to Governors Island, where polo was first played in the United States nearly 70 years ago. This year’s event beneficiary is Hope Help & Rebuild Haiti ( HHRH), an initiative of Urban Zen and the next evolution of Hope, Help & Relief Haiti. Co-hosted by world-renowned Argentine polo player Nacho Figueras, Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan and Master of Ceremonies Hugh Jackman.

The fashion was all about being “uber chic” and expressing one’s individual personalities. There was a whole playing field designated to public picnicking, polo watching, and loads of champagne. I was fixated on the spectacular fascinators aka hats the ladies were wearing. All of the men, whatever they wore, stood out and looked quite dashing in their duds.

I was invited to take a place at the red carpet so I can capture all the fabulousity of the A- list celebrities. Nacho Figueras, so painfully handsome, I almost dropped my camera. His equally gorgeous wife, Delfina Blaquier, was ravishing in a Marc Jacobs dress. Donna Karan walked the carpet with one of her latest hand-bags, only one word can describe it… spectacular. Clearly I must get one asap.

One of my favorite dress designers, Catherine Malandrino, choose to wear all black; she was edgy yet feminine and the look was perfect. Hugh Jackman was dashing in a grey suite and light blue shirt. He shared the red carpet with comedian Kathy Griffin, who also wore a feminine black dress, and chose to top her look off with a pair of black crocs. I asked them to pose for me, and as you can see, things got rather playful on the red carpet.

Actress Sanaa Lathan was a vision in a cream colored dress, her very first time at the Polo Classic. Alex Wek walked the carpet with her mum and they both brought such color and vibrance with their fashion choices as well as their wonderful personalities. Other notables that walked the red carpet were Marc Jacobs, Naomi Watts, Vanessa Kay, president Veuve Cliquot, Kelly Rutheford, Whitney Port, Nicky Hilton, Erin Fetherston, Isla Fisher, Wyclef Jean, and the ever so handsome hotelier Andre Balaz.

Strolling through the crowds after, the theme continued, fabulous outfits perfect for polo watching and sipping on Veuve Cliquot. All of this and for a great cause, for the Hope, Help & Rebuild Haiti initiative. I hope you enjoy my photo diary as much as I enjoyed taking all the pictures.
