Haute Jewelry: Bling for the Stars
by Evan Hosie

What do Milla Jovovich, Jenny McCarthy and Vanessa Williams have in common?

Alberto Parada, their jeweler, of course.

Already a red-carpet staple in L.A., his collection can now be seen at two famed high-end jewelry stores in L.A.; Readers Fine Jewelry in Santa Monica and Glendora Village Goldsmith in Glendora.

Known for his original, one-of –a kind pieces, Parada is also popular in California for his commitment to “socially responsible jewelry practices.” Simply put, that means he doesn’t use “blood” diamonds and uses various tones of 100 percent reclaimed 18K gold, plus fair-trade gems. (He is a leading member of the ‘No Dirty Gold’ campaign.)

Celebrities love his modern statement – almost architectural in feel – pieces but the collection also includes some timeless custom-designed heirloom pieces. Asked about his inspiration, Parada says he draws inspiration from the simplistic natural beauty and bounty of his native South America.

Blending diamonds and brilliant semi-precious stones with various tones of 100 percent reclaimed 18K gold, Alberto’s jewelry is handcrafted and manufactured in the United States using conflict-free diamonds and fair-trade gems.

The self-taught designer says he is “thrilled that his collection is now available to Angelenos.”

Anything in the color is sure to make a bold statement, whether it’s flashy or just plain shiny. We’ve seen tons of gold cars like gold-wrapped Infiniti G-37 and gold-plated Dartz, especially on the streets of China, but this is the first time seeing a gold Porsche 911 Carrera 4S there.

As Awards seasons come and go, it now seems the red carpet almost garners more eyes than the actual awards ceremonies do. This is a relatively new phenomenon, as the red carpet wasn’t actually an international fashion show until the early 1990s.
