Haute Unveiling: 2011 Samuel Adams Utopias

Some of life’s best gifts come but once a year.

Craft beer enthusiasts rejoice: Jamaica Plains-based brewery Samuel Adams has just unveiled the 2011 batch of its most extreme (and expensive) beer: Samuel Adams Utopias.

Internationally recognized as the world’s “strongest beer commercially available” by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2002, the 2011 offering of Samuel Adams Utopias packs a Marciano-esque 27% ABV punch. Available in limited quantities (only 53 barrels were produced) in ceramic, brew kettle-shaped decanters, the Samuel Adams Utopias are individually numbered and will be sold at $150.00 per 24-ounce bottle.

According to a statement released by the brewery on its website, “The 2011 batch of Samuel Adams Utopias is a blend of liquids which have been aged in a variety of wood casks for up to 18 years. This complex aging process enhances the beer’s distinct vanilla, maple and cocoa notes, and it offers an aroma of ginger and cinnamon. Sherry casks from Spain and Portugal add nutty oak, toffee and honey notes, while Madeira and port casks offer a slightly more elegant, dark fruit aroma, imparting earthy flavors inherent to fine European spirits.”

Best served at room temperature as a two-ounce pour in a snifter glass, the individual flavors will intensify over time, making Samuel Adams Utopias a savor-worthy treat that gets even better with age (like a 1787 Château Lafitte or actress Helen Mirren).
