After a fun night of partying in New York’s Meatpacking district, there’s nothing I want more than diner food. I want French fries, and grilled cheese and a nice big glass of diet coke to wash it all down. Luckily for me, the iconic Empire Diner has gone under a full renovation and has just re-opened as the Highliner. The outside still looks the same, but inside instead of one long counter, there are two, one section a liquor bar where food will be served and the other a communal table with stools.

Last week, they started serving drinks and this week food. The Highliner will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 a.m. Chef Jeremy Tomczak who previously worked with Laurent Tourondel, as well as at Aquavit and at the French Culinary Institute, serves a new (and much more haute) American style of cuisine. Although he did his best to stay true to authentic, diner food, Chef Jeremy admits to adding some unexpected twists. Don’t be shocked when you find mustard greens alongside your mac and cheese and/or fried sweetbreads instead of chickens along with your waffles. The Highliner is a definite must to check out.
