Thin Watch, Big Time: The Ralph Lauren Slim Classique Square Guilloché

Once upon a time, there was a word that described what every man aspired to be: a gentleman. Shockingly enough, virtues like subtlety and self restraint were prized as the hallmarks of a man worthy of the respect of his fellows (as well as the admiration of the ladies) and ostentation and look-at-me brashness just meant you still hadn’t learned that the speaking softly part of speak softly, but carry a big stick is just as important as the stick.

In memory of that time, and as a reminder that gentleman still means something worth striving for, we present for your viewing pleasure a timepiece from Ralph Lauren that virtually defines the word: The Slim Classique Square.  No brawny piece of overcompensation, this watch –the Slim Classique Square, at 27mm across, exudes the confidence that only comes from total mastery of the art of watchmaking.

The drop dead elegant, extra flat dress watch was, and still is among connoisseurs, considered one of the highest expressions of the craft, since a very thin movement is far more difficult to construct to high precision than a thick one.  At a mere 5.75mm thick the Slim Classique Square lies on the wrist with a grace that makes it the perfect punctuation mark for formal dress and well composed business attire, with engine turned guilloché on the bezel carried through in the pattern on the dial providing a subtle but  superbly controlled flourish.  Inside is a movement crafted by legendary extra flat watch constructor Piaget for Ralph Lauren.  And, of course, the Slim Classique Square doesn’t shout look-at-me in yellow or red gold, but seduces with the subtle glow of white.

Available as shown, in white gold with guilloché engine turning on the bezel and decoration on the dial, $15,200 at Ralph Lauren Flagship Boutiques.

Jack Forster is the Editor in Chief of Revolution Magazine, a quarterly publication celebrating the world of fine watchmaking, and he also manages Revolution Online www.revo-online.com, the foremost information and discussion site on the internet for watch enthusiasts.

De Beers Diamond Jewelers Makes Influential Expansion To China
by Leanna Brittis

Today, De Beers Diamond Jewelers expanded by opening its first outpost in Mainland China. Known as the quintessential diamond jeweler that is independently managed and operated by LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the brand has opened a 734-square-foot store at Shin Kong Place in Beijing. “De Beers is achieving strong growth in Asia, and China is an important and exciting market for us,” said Francois Delagem, chief executive of De Beers Diamond Jewelers, on the expansion.

De Beers is already popular in cities like New York, Paris, San Francisco, and London, but its new China presence stamps not only a market shift, but a cultural one as well. Up until 1993, when De Beers began marketing diamonds in China, diamond rings were a rare commodity to come by. Now China is much more welcoming to the diamond, which was shown in a 25 percent sales growth for China last year. The country is now tied with Japan as the second-biggest consumer of diamonds behind the United States.

Haute Dining: Batali’s Birreria Rooftop Italian Beer Garden at Fifth Ave’s Eataly

Eataly, chef Mario Batali’s popular artisanal Italian market and food court, has upped their ante with Birreria, a spacious rooftop restaurant and beer mecca situated at the top of Eataly’s Fifth Avenue building. Giving German biergartens a run for their money, the Italian counterpart will feature full restaurant service of a delectable beer-centric menu created by chef Alex Pilas.

The menu will feature dishes that pair serendipitously with Birreria’s extensive list of Italian and American craft beers, in addition to their own beers, brewed on the premises under the direction of Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Brewery, Italian brewmasters Teo Musso and Leonardo Di Vincenze, and Eataly’s own brewmaster Brook Carretta. Three original Birreria cask ales will be available – an American pale ale with thyme accents, a mild English ale with hints of chestnut, and a wheat beer with that distinctive peppercorn kick.

The menu will be equally as tasty with a variety of simple but hearty Italian fare offered, such as four different sausages, three braised pork shoulders (one to change seasonally), and an entire menu section dedicated to mushrooms for vegetarian brew aficionados. Wine and offerings from a full bar will also be available.

According to Eater NY, Birreria’s official opening date is set for Friday, June 3 – sooner, if things go well – and will be open year round, regardless of the weather, thanks to a retractable roof and ample heat lamps for when we bid farewell to the warmth of summer. Birreria is located above Eataly on the roof at 200 Fifth Avenue. For more information, visit www.mariobatali.com.

by Jasmine Berry

Los Angeles Hautel Terranea Resort was featured on the recent CW TV series Shedding for the Wedding, created by the producers of the hit show Biggest Loser. The eight-week show, shot on site at the beautiful oceanfront resort, concluded with the couple who lost the greatest amount of weight winning an eco-friendly dream wedding at Terranea.

Terranea was a natural choice for the fitness-minded show. The scenic 102-acre property and word-class spa and fitness facilities lure hundreds of guests each day. The 5,000-square-foot ocean view Fitness & Wellness Center has state-of-the-art Life Fitness cardiovascular and weight training equipment, a movement studio and an outdoor oceanfront yoga terrace. The resort’s spa pool is great for swimming laps, while the surrounding Pacific is ideal for kayaking, paddle boarding, or scuba diving.

Haute 100 Update: Fred Deluca’s Subway Franchise Tries Out Café Concept
by Jasmine Berry

Haute 100 Miami billionaire and Subway co-founder Fred Deluca is trying a new more upscale Subway variation, called Subway Café. The company hopes Subway Café will address the needs of franchisees looking to open up shop in office buildings and other more high-end locations.

The test restaurant was launched by a Subway franchisee in an office building in Alexandria, Va. It has since expanded to about 15 locations, expecting to add 10 more by the end of this year. Although still in the initial stages of development, Subway Café is designed as an intersection of a sandwich shop and a coffee bar. It will be slightly more spacious than an average Subway, with brick or wood paneled walls, more lounge-style seating with comfortable armchairs, and depending upon the location, a fireplace.

In addition to the standard Subway breakfast and traditional menus, the Subway Café offers a variety of baked goods, hot and cold espresso drinks, coffee, hot and iced chai latte, hot chocolate and frozen blended beverages. The coffee would be supplied by Seattle’s Best, which supplies coffee to regular Subway restaurants.

St. Kitts Marriott: The Perfect Miami Getaway

St. Kitts Marriott Pool

Miami folks tend to need to be whisked away from the chaotic buzz that this Magic City has to offer, and what better way to do so than by exploring a small, secluded island providing the perfect getaway?

St. Kitts Marriott Guest Room
Step into the relaxing St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino that houses 393 guest rooms, a 15,000-square-foot luxury spa, the Caribbean’s largest Vegas-style casino, championship 18-hole golf course, and fine dining worthy to salivate over. A home away from home for the South Florida locals where your sanctuary is only a only a hop, skip and jump away from your real world. Of course getting served fruit punch with your hot towels upon arrival doesn’t hurt either.

St. Kitts Marriott Golf Course

Located on the North Fringe Bay Beach along the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, the Marriott offers its guests a retreat packed with luxury living right inside (and outside) your room. If you choose to stay close, the resort has everything you need for a romantic getaway, a girls weekend or simply a vacation away from the everyday routine.

St. Kitts Marriott Pool At Night
The three pools will be sure to help you unwind and keep you cool after you play a few rounds at the hotel’s very own tennis courts or when you break away from your fitness class at the gym. However, the dancing blue ocean is also a breathtaking view, ideal for water sports or simply lounging working on your tan. When you get hungry you will find there are plenty of options with the eight different restaurants–Blu, the seafood haven and the Royal Grill Steakhouse, known for its table side Caesar salad service.

Once dinner is digested and the kids are tucked in bed, sneak on over to The Keys Cigar & Rum Bar, known for their tasty Mojitos and smooth cigars. The Lobby Bar and Blue Martini are also excellent choices to go “limin,’’ a popular local saying to get your party on.

Brimstone
For those who wish to explore the island the friendly Marriott staff will be glad to help you discover what St. Kitts has to offer. Take a walk through the lush rain forrest, and if you’re feeling daring hike up the 3,000-foot Mount Liamuiga volcano to check out lava formations and breathtaking views. A fascinating way to see what nature holds and a true bonding experience for you and your travel buddies.

Enjoy taking a ride over to the un-harvested sugarcane fields but not without stopping at Brimstone Hill Fortress, the 800-foot-high UNESCO world heritage site. See the stunning views of the island from up high on the sculptured fighting grounds. The Strip is also a local favorite and tourist must see. Here you can find low-key beach bars with favorite drinks, like the tasty “Ting with a Sting.” Head off the strip and onto Reggae Beach to witness a 700-pound pig named Wilbur leisurely relaxing on the sand or occasionally bathing in the water. The oceanfront restaurant Spice Mill is also a hotspot to check out with its gorgeous views of Nevis and delicious fresh Mahi Mahi.

After all of your excursions it’s best to take it easy and step into the Emerald Mist Spa to treat yourself to the local favorite bamboo massage, using hot bamboo sticks to gently rub all over your tired muscles. Then plop in the hot and cold plunge pools, wipe away the daily stress in the Vichy shower and loosen up in the steam room.

The St. Kitts Marriott is a place of pure relaxation and perfect for when you need a relaxing but entertaining vacation. With a helpful staff willing to accommodate you in every way possible you are able to hang loose, capturing the lifestyle essence to the island’s own monkey population.

Hautos: Mercedes’ New Super Sports Car to Make U.S. Debut in Fall
by Jasmine Berry

Do you like your martinis shaken, not stirred? Do you believe that tomorrow never dies, the world is not enough, and diamonds are forever? Then the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster just may be your vehicle of choice. AMG, the same company that provides the safety cars for Formula 1 World Championships, is bringing its brand new dream car 2012 SLS AMG Roadster stateside this fall.

The AMG 6.3-liter V8 front-mid engine with a peak output of 563 hp and 479-pound-feet of torque, the seven-speed dual clutch transaxle transmission, and the sports suspension with aluminum double wishbones make this one fast car.

The Roadster’s interior is reminiscent of an airplane cockpit, with its wing-shaped dashboard, jet-engined inspired air vents, and the new e-select lever shaped like an airplane’s thrust control. Standard luxury features of the vehicle include: KEYLESS GO starting function, heated seats, COMAND with navigation and DVD player, alarm system with tow-away protection and interior monitoring, and detachable glass windstop. The car also features Mercedes-Benz exclusive AIRSCARF system, which blows warm air from vents in the head restraints, warming passengers like an invisible scarf.

The car’s soft top opens and closes in a mere 11 seconds, and can be operated while driving at speeds up to 35 mph. With the AMG DRIVE UNIT, drivers can choose from three different suspension set-ups: Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus.

In addition to the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG surround sound system, another optional entertainment highlight is the AMG Performance Media. This race-inspired system combines multiple telemetric displays, such as engine data, real-time display of lateral and linear acceleration combined with braking performance, and lap times on a racetrack, to display within the dashboard. Three displays can be shown at any one time, with the most vital information displayed in the center.

Additionally, the Roadster has acceleration skid control (ASR) technology, which applies brake pressure to improve traction if one of the drive wheels starts to spin. Look out for the 2012MY SLS Roadster this fall. Between its mind-blowing speed and futuristic features, this is one vehicle with a license to thrill.

Haute Dining: Buon Appétito-Villa Pacri Ristorante
by Karen Holly Berliner

Cross the century-old cobblestoned streets of the Meatpacking District en route to this space and you’re already put in the mood.
Enter this villa like structure, walk upstairs and allow yourself to be transformed and welcomed home. Much akin to kicking off your shoes and plunking your suitcase down on the bed of a hotel room abroad, you immediately feel comfortable at Villa Pacri Ristorante; like enjoying all of the splendors and opulence of a dear old friend’s authentic Italian villa.

Renowned hospitality entrepreneurs Remi Laba and Aymeric Clemente (of Bagatelle fame) joined forces to convert this former Merkato 55 space into a spellbinding Italian villa. Designed by award-winning French architect Cyril Durand Behar, each level lends itself to a different purpose and atmosphere albeit very much unified by an all encompassing vibe of Mediterranean comfort and luxury.

The dining room invites you graciously with its cozy earth tone hues, ornate crystal chandeliers with candelabra lighting, lavish draperies, dining nooks, vaulted alcoves, distressed wood floors and plush-cushioned furniture. Oversized vases appointed with fresh flowers, contemporary art and floor to ceiling windows give the space a smattering of light and airiness. The staff here is constantly poised and ready to see to your every request, much anticipating it before you even do. A very nice touch.

And oh, the delicious Italian fare. Executive Chef Todd MacDonald truly wows with his well seasoned culinary flare, featuring a menu that is as much aristocratic as it is rustic. Their Prosciutto di Parma is fresh and delightful, with generous amounts of curled flavorful cold meats mingling with floral edibles like violet artichokes and sylvetta arugula. The Organic Risotto Milanese with Slow Cooked Veal Cheeks and the Spaghetti with Maine Lobster are sublime. Should you desire, a skilled mixologist mixes drinks at the dining room bar with great care to individual requests. Seasonal daily specials are artful and enthusiastically presented.

Just as much worthy, the ground level features a gourmet market and a café. A custom-made chandelier made of 300 wine glasses, a mosaic of colorful tiles, rustic cast iron columns, Italian marble counter tops and 100-year-old wood beams across the ceiling all make for universal appeal. Serving morning through night, it also features retail and take-out space offering a fine selection of imported Italian products including olive oils, pastas, and truffles, as well as homemade items like bread, cured meats, soups and signature pastries.

On the lowest level, the Tzigan is this space’s upscale lounge that features an intimate setting complete with a unique décor done in precious metals. For something unique, VIP clients here are given the opportunity to join an exclusive carafe program, whereby they may rent a shelved box in order to store their favorite luxury spirits around for their next visit. (Cognacs, Scotch and other rare brandies) Tzigane will also be the first club in New York to offer bottles of wine for those who want to keep going with their wine after dinner. The club is slated to open during the middle of August for a soft launch.

A visit to this space is an easy indulgence. After all, sometimes don’t you just want to be swept off of your feet?
