Never Before Seen Lichtenstein Drawing Placed on Auction
by Blair Cassuto

A never before seen original drawing by Roy Lichtenstein has been placed on auction at the Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale on May 11, 2011 at Christie’s New York. This masterpiece, entitled Kiss V, is estimated to sell between $800,000-1,200,000. Made with graphite and wax crayon on paper, this drawing was found in the previous owner’s locker after buying a lottery ticket for $10. This unique piece of history captures the jaw dropping beauty and cultural melting pot of New York City during its revolutionary transformation in the 1960s.
Jonathan Laib, a Post-War and Contemporary Art Specialist and Head of Morning Sale, exclaims, “The drawing for ‘Kiss V’ is a master work created by Roy Lichtenstein while he was at the height of his creative abilities. This ambiguous situation registers somewhere between agony and ecstasy. Lichtenstein accomplishes much of what defines his greatest works, with this drawing’s effects are long lasting after entering the crevices of the mind.”
Christie’s, the world’s leading art business, has global auctions totaling approximately $5 billion. Founded by James Christie in 1766, Christie’s conducted the greatest auctions of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Today it remains a popular showcase for the lavishly beautiful and world-renowned artists that have left a lasting impression on art and it’s lovers.
