Miami Beach Polo World Cup Kicks Off an Event-Filled Weekend

When one thinks of polo and Miami Beach, the image of water might instantly occur, however, on Thursday afternoon contestants mounted their trusty steeds to battle mallot-to-mallot against top contending teams on the white sandy shores of Miami’s beautiful beaches.

The Hublot team became the first lauded crew as they took home the Miami Beach Women’s Polo Cup on Thursday afternoon on the opening day. Hublot’s Tara Lordi was aptly named MVP, as she scored six goals, including the winning goal in a second overtime shootout to defeat the AMG-Mercedes team in the finals.

In Bracket I play, The Raleigh Hotel shot out Jet Blue in the finals, winning 2-0, with Raleigh’s Libby Scripps taking MVP honors.

Thursday was also the official grand opening ceremony ignited by a reception and press conference to welcome media to this year’s world-class sporting event. “The AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup is not only a highlight of the social season, but a must-see event that is now a staple on the annual sporting calendar,” said Bruce Orosz, President and Co-Founder of The Polo Life, LLC. “The tournament has become a major attraction to general enthusiasts and Polo aficionados alike, who come to enjoy a sport steeped with tradition in a setting that is world-renowned, bringing considerable media attention through its appeal to the South Florida tourism industry.”

Miami Beach Polo will continue through the weekend, with the first matches of the 2011 Miami Beach Men’s Polo World Cup tournament.
