Haute Event: The Society Opens Bill Cunningham New York at O Cinema

Last Thursday night, The Society hosted the private Miami opening of Bill Cunningham New York at O Cinema. The documentary, which covers the life of one of New York’s icons-Bill Cunningham, has earned rave reviews from various international publications and film festivals. O Cinema has extended their showings through the week ending Sunday, May 1.

Fashion and society photographer for The New York Times, Cunningham has been instrumental to the fashion world through his introduction of street fashion photography more than 30 years ago. The film chronicles more than 30 years of New York’s most iconic eras, people, and ideas. Name it, he’s photographed them: the Kennedys, Elizabeth Taylor, Anna Wintour, your old neighbor on the Upper East Side.

Known for donning a blue jacket and riding on his bicycle, he will do anything (and we mean ANYTHING) for the shot that he wants. Bill’s passion jumps through the screen and inspires for days, plus the cameo commentary is fabulous. “Both Bill and the film especially inspire those that choose the path less taken,” said Galena Mosovich of GMPR.

The trendy event was hosted by two of The Society’s founders, Amanda Blakley and Ashleigh Dempster, who were equally fashionable in an ode to the event and to the arrival of spring in flowy dress. The ‘Culturites’ (as The Society’s members are called) enjoyed Zacapa Rum cocktails garnished with bright edible flowers and organic hors d’oeuvres. During the screening, the guests munched on gourmet popcorn in custom bags donning the film’s poster. All guests, including the males, left in tow with DKNY Hosiery’s new Spring 2011 line, which included 8 pairs in varying sizes to share with friends. Guests in attendance included Daniel and Marcella Novela, Hassan Pierre, Zac Courtney, Tracy Gayla, and our very own National Fashion Director, Jilian Sanz.

The Society hosts a variety of private cultural events each month and has chapters in New York and Toronto. To be in the know about upcoming events, it is essential to become a ‘culturite’.
