Christie’s Could Sell Warhol’s Last Great Masterpiece for $40 Million
by Susie Wong

The face of the late, great Andy Warhol will grace the confines of Christie’s celebrated auction house in New York City on May 11, 2011 at 7 p.m.  What is considered his last great piece, entitled Self-Portrait, will headline Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Auction.

Executed in Warhol’s signature Pop Red, the same color he utilized to create his famous image of Marilyn Monroe, the haunting image still portrays a glimpse into the troubled and transient life that was this icon’s. In this 1986 piece Warhol explored himself, depicting a picture of a cool eccentric man veiled by mystery and conflict that ultimately led to his unfortunate demise.

One of the largest paintings ever rendered by the artist, Christie’s is estimated to rake in anywhere from $30 to $40 million from this monumental sale.
