Celebrate Earth Day in Phoenix With These Local Businesses

Celebrate April 22, also known as Earth Day, in the Valley with these businesses that are doing something special in honor of our planet!

Be a Water Warrior with Aveda
In the past four years, Aveda has raised more than $12 million during Earth Month in support of clean water projects in the U.S. and around the world. Your favorite Aveda stylist or service provider may be participating in Earth Month by donating proceeds from appointments to one of the brand’s clean water providers. Go here to find an Aveda near you. A few Aveda salons in the Valley that are Earth Month Leaders are Mood Swings in Tempe; 2BU in Scottsdale Fashion Square; and Ohana in downtown Scottsdale.

Speak Up With Spokes at True Food Kitchen
Ride your bike to True Food Kitchen between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday, April 22, and receive a free appetizer or dessert with your meal. The offer applies to both the Biltmore Fashion Park and Scottsdale Quarter locations, but you’ll need to print this coupon before you pedal off.

Candlelit Dinner at Talavera
Talavera restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North will be featuring a “lights-out,” sustainable, four-course dinner paired with organic wine, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, April 22. Courses include chilled watercress soup, an organic spring vegetable salad, an all-natural California rack of lamb, and a peach seltzer mascarpone ice cream float. The cost is $80 per person, and a limited a la carte menu will be available that evening in Talavera. Call 480.513.5085 for more information or to make a reservation.

Reduce Litter and Waste With Starbucks
All day long, on April 22, Starbucks locations across the Valley will be offering a 20 percent discount on all their travel mugs in an effort to encourage people to reduce waste. Plus, if you already have a travel mug and you bring it in, you’ll get a free brewed coffee or tea. According to Starbucks, 1.2 million people took advantage of this Earth Day offer last year,  and throughout 2010, customers brought in their own tumblers more than 32 million times, keeping nearly 1.45 million pounds of paper out of landfills.

Conserve Alongside the Desert Botanical Garden and APS
The Desert Botanical Garden, with APS, has compiled some great tips and educational opportunities for Phoenix residents to better mobilize, celebrate, explore and learn about the earth. Go here for helpful hints on how to compost, how to choose water-efficient plants for landscaping your yard, and more.

Make the Green Choice with APS
And speaking of APS, you can visit the company’s APS Green Choice webpage to learn how to change to CFL bulbs or renewable energy sources like solar and wind, switch to high-efficiency air conditioning (and possibly even collect a rebate for it), and make other choices that will protect the environment. If you’re an APS customer, you can also log on to the company’s website to request to go paperless. Find out here how you can take part in APS Green Choice programs.
