The Three Best Irish Pubs to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Los Angeles

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Although the history of this cheerful holiday is actually quite solemn–commemorating the death of St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland – it is also widely accepted as a secular holiday celebrating Irish culture. That means wearing green, eating traditional Irish fare like corned beef, drinking Irish brews and rocking out to great music at your local pub!

Los Angeles heritage is undoubtedly more Spanish in influence than Irish, but lucky for us, we do have our share of Irish joints to help us celebrate secular St. Patrick’s day in good spirits.

Now a part of restaurateur Cedd Moses’ 213 portfolio of downtown hotspots, Casey’s Irish Pub has been an integral part of L.A. history for decades. The building which houses it was built is 1916 and has served as everything from a general store to a Turkish bath! What we now know as Casey’s has occupied the downstairs basement since 1969. This “Super Pub” is always on the insiders list of great hideaway places to drink. On St. Patrick’s day, it makes it to the top of everyone’s agenda for the evening. Today, the festivities kick off early and last all day,  with live music and DJs – including a U2 tribute band! Casey’s Irish Pub is located at 613 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, 213.629.2353.

Next stop – Molly Mallone’s in Miracle Mile. This dive-y joint has been inebriating the denizens of L.A. for more than 40 years. With an authentic gritty grimy Irish pub vibe, Molly Mallone’s has been owned and operated by the same Irish family for 32 years. Stop in for some serious beer and whiskey and linger over live music. Today’s lineup includes stories from Irish youths and a bagpiper! Molly Malone’s is located at 575 South Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, 323.935.1577.

For those who have never attempted a So-Cal beach ‘pub crawl,’ this St. Patrick’s Day, make the most of what the West Side has to offer in its offering of Irish pubs by the sea! If you must choose one, opt for O’Brien’s on Main. You’ll hit crowds and loud music, and a general pervasiveness of utter ruckus. But hey, isn’t that what celebrations are all about? The smallish patio is nice and will allow you some breathing room after an Irish car bomb amidst the lively crowds inside. O’Brien’s is located at 2941 Main Street, Santa Monica, 310.396.4725.
