Next week, Luminaire, the sleek and contemporary furniture and accessories store, will debut its new collection, Alternative, by Spanish designer and architect Joan Lao. The reception and exhibit will be held Thursday, March 31 at the Luminaire Lab at 3901 NE 2nd Avenue in Miami’s Design District.

Throughout his 22-year career, Lao has become an icon in current design. He has undertaken more than 3,000 projects and his interior designs, which generate emotional responses such as joy or comfort, have been featured in everything from private houses and apartments to hotels and even museums.

Integrating the Japanese idea of Wabi-sabi, a theory that presents the beauty found in the natural variations of materials and surface textures, Lao utilizes various finishes for his collection for Luminaire, such as veneers applied with a special scratching technique, organic pigments, stone, steel, oak and leather. Lao also employs a specialized, resistant lacquer that offers remarkable durability while maintaining natural surfaces.

The collection includes a variety of tables, upholstered furniture, in addition to customizable, modular storage systems that are distinctively crafted, as well as useful to its owners.

Coming from a design outlook where furniture goes beyond just decoration or practicality, Lao designs pieces for the Alternative collection that evoke balance and harmony by creating a sense of well-being.

The opening reception takes place Thursday, March 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Luminaire Lab, 3901 NE 2nd Ave., Miami
