Haute Dining: Bar Covell is L.A.’s Newest Hidden Gem

When my dearest friend first took me to this recently opened, hidden little Los Feliz gem, it was love at first sight. Bar Covell is undoubtedly one of L.A.’s best wine bars and a must-go for all wine and cheese aficionados.

There are no menus…apparently they are not needed; a tactic, which initially boggled my mind. However, my anxieties were very quickly laid to rest as I began to observe the scene around me.

Covell’s all-male bartenders are suave and charismatic–working their way through the bar, chatting to (or rather, charming) the patrons, getting a feel for what wine, beer and food would best suit their customers’ tastes and preferences.

The owner, Dustin Lancaster can be spotted most nights engaging with the patrons around the bar. Any questions they may have, he answers and the wine flows. According to Dustin, each and every one of his staff members are “over-qualified.” It has to be said that the staff here know what they are talking about. The fate of your empty wine glass lays within their knowledgeable hands.

Of course, wine and beer is not all that is served in this fabulous establishment. The food here is just as enticing, with a small, but gratifying list of appetizers to choose from. Each selection works to complement whichever beverage you are indulging in on the night. The cheese board is superb, as is their delectable meat platter, and their Macaroni and Cheese pot is unrivaled.

Be sure to get here early, since after 8 p.m., the crowds start to flock and finding a table or seat at the bar can prove to be a tricky and time-consuming task.

A note of caution: Once you bask in the Covell experience, expect to become a familiar face there.
