Haute Décor: Marin County Interior Design Company Talks Pillows

"Lush And Colorful Fabrics Make A Room"

Hilary Sessions knows how to pillow talk.  At least that’s what I gather when I step into her home/showroom in Mill Valley where she is showing off the newest plumped-to-perfection additions to her Quarry Hill Design interior design business.

“Pillows are like adding accessories to an outfit,” says Sessions. “They give a room personality, dimension and color.”

Looking around, I want to dive into a pile on the couch (but that would be rude) or curl up on a couple in front of the fire place. Instead I run my fingers along the carnival of silky and colorful fabrics, and nowhere do I see more than two pillows same.  Using only top quality material from manufactures like Schumacher, Lee Jofa and Fortuny to name only a few, each pillow is machine sewn and hand finished at a workshop with whom Sessions has been partnered for years, assuring a quality and custom look sure to add luxe to your love seat or brilliance to your bedroom. Prints run the range from classic and traditional to whimsical and modern, and everything in between.

Sessions is no stranger to decorating and her education and background in design, art history, and architecture have served her well in this domain. Sessions and Quarry Hill Designs have been at it now for 20 years, first working with realtors to stage homes, then taking on private interior décor clients. At one time Sessions had a warehouse filled with enough furnishings to stage five homes, including nearly 300 pillows.  When the recession hit two years ago, she scaled back.

“I had been talking about custom pillows for nearly five years,” she said.

"Colorful Pillows In Varied Shapes and Colors"

You’ll be glad she did. Quarry Hill Pillows launches April 1 and these are no ordinary catalogue pieces. Like a little lipstick and funky pair of earrings does for me, these beautification boosts “give a facelift to a room,” she says. She hopes her experience and her attention to the individual needs of each client will help grow this sector of her business.

“Not every client is the same, not everyone’s taste is the same so I don’t want every house to look the same,” she says,  ”I’ll also work with clients to find a specific fabric they like, or even use their own fabric.”

Standard pillow sizes are  22 x 22 inches and start at $125. The sumptuous Fortuny silk box pillow I tried to stuff in my purse was $250. She also works with Sunbrella and other exterior fabric for outdoor furniture.

Eventually Sessions plans to have online ordering capability on her website but for now, log on have a look around, and contact her for specific requests. You’ll soon discover that Sessions, and her pillows, know how to work a room.
