Andre Butzer at Carbon 12 Gallery

Opening soon at Carbon 12 Gallery is an exhibition featuring the work of German artist Andre Butzer. The artist’s first solo show in the Middle East, Butzer is the founder of the legendary art academy “Isotrop” and co-editor of a magazine with the same name. His bright colorful works appear to constantly shift between abstraction and figuration and are created through the use of strong expressive brushstrokes.

“I am not a painter, but an artist,” states Butzer seemingly unfazed by current artistic classifications, genres, and trends. Encompassed in his work are an abundance of various signs and symbols referencing American and German history as well as recent pop culture. The titles he uses appear to be light and even humorous. “Blue Smurfs”, “Entombment of Winnie the Pooh”, or “Favorite Painting of Paul Cezanne” suggest an appropriation of various characters from the entertainment world. The works nevertheless go beyond what might be considered a take on Pop Art to capture the artist’s personal visual vocabulary. “Science-Fiction Expressionism” is what Butzer calls his bright playful and at times grotesque style.
