Spring Fashion
by Loren Ridinger

Fashion takes a seismic shift with the changing of the seasons, making the way we approach dressing entirely different than in the months prior. And while some trends are cyclically consistent, reemerging season after season we look eagerly forward to what new trends the current fashion season will bring. For spring 2011 there are a myriad options ranging from crisp white lace to bold prints and a new interpretation of the ever-evolving animal trend—this season we forego the usual animal prints we see year after year and trade in spots and stripes for full on animal images that include such specimens as giraffes and monkeys.

PRIMAL INSTINCTS

Instead of leopard spots and python scales, the fashion set has turned to the animal image in an effort to modernize the trend. Giraffes at Louis Vuitton, Monkeys at Prada, Jaguars at Cartier, and my own interpretation through Loren Jewels with snake bangles and such; it’s a jungle out there.

WHITE WEDDING

There’s something about lace that speaks to femininity in a sexy and at the same time regal way. Major houses like Dolce & Gabbana, Brioni, and Oscar de la Renta have taken a fresh and virginal approach to lace dressing for spring. Pure white interpretations via short shorts and floor skimming dresses are complemented by accessories. I love the idea of lace injected into an earring or handbag, making them feel like special treasures with a strong story to tell.

PRINTS CHARMING

There’s a strong misconception about how to approach prints. A fear, even, that prints might clash leaving you looking like a clown. This spring, designers have tackled this issue, approaching it head-on and delivering the boldest patterns in a big way. Zac Posen’s interpretation through his Z Spoke collection was whimsical while other labels like L.AM.B turned out over-sized geometric patterns that made a major statement. DKNY and Michael Angel intermixed opposing prints that melded surprisingly well together and introduced a new way to play with pattern. I recommend playing with the trend and seeing what works best for you, just be sure to table the fear…have fun with it.
