Haute Event: Gavello Jewelry Launch at Bolshoi Restaurant

For one night only, the upscale restaurant Bolshoi turned into a Venice Carnivale set. The grand celebration marked the opening of first boutique for the Italian jewelry brand Gavello in Moscow. As the occasion required, the party was thrown with greatest aplomb attracting many celebrity guests.

The venue was transferred into Venice masquerade party. Recently, this topic been ruthlessly exploited, but in this case, Carnavale di Gavello, the concept is justified. First of all, Italy is the birthplace of the brand. And secondly, real carnivale is due to start very soon. By the way, tickets to Venice were raffled at the party. Although those who didn’t win them still had an the opportunity to plunge into carnival ambience without leaving Moscow.

Most of the guests adhered the dressed code and came all dressed up in extravagant and compelling carnival costumes finished with refined fans and masks. But all attention was on the jewelry. The carats in the window cases blinded no less.

High-level jewelry brand Gavello was established in the end of the 1970s as a family business. Gavello is young, dynamic, organizational, and constantly attentive to the research and the development of quality production and of trends. It is a leader in its own sector. Its jewels stand out and are considered one of a kind. With artisan attention to detail and a precise workmanship, Gavello creates products that combine modern technology and unequalled artisanship with ability and emotional interest.

The UBUNTU Initiative: Roger Ballen and SOS Children’s Villages at UNESCO, Beirut

Boarding House (2005) by Roger Ballen

Transient and surreal, capturing the remnants of past meetings and possible future encounters in a shelter used for temporary abode and immediate survival, the photographs from Roger Ballen’s most recent book Boarding House depict an imaginary child-like space and life 0n the edge.

Girl in White (2002) Roger Ballen

The photographs will be featured on March1st in a special exhibition at UNESCO in Beirut in collaboration with SOS Children’s Villages and the arrival of the organization’s President, Mr. Helmut Kutin. Part of “The UBUNTU Initiative”, “Ubuntu” meaning “respecting each other” in ancient African,  the exhibition mphasizes a common social responsibility towards children and supports the founding of a loving home for every child.

Encroachment (2001) by Roger Ballen

Founded in 1949, SOS Children’s Villages follows the worldwide credo to give every child a loving home endowing them with a happy and memorable childhood. Now an international non-governmental social development organization, SOS Children’s Villages actively promotes children’s rights and welfare in 133 countries.

Happy Happy (2001) by Roger Ballen

The Lebanese Association of SOS Children’s Villages began in 1964 and aids abandoned and orphaned children find the security within a new family and home. Children are provided with a mother as well as brothers and sisters regardless of their religion, race, or culture. They are also educated and skilled so that they can then contribute and interact beneficially with society.

Innocence (2006) by Roger Ballen

Ubuntu is a culture project-initiative which advocates for a better world for children. It specifically emphasizes a child’s inalienable “rights to childhood” in all cultural contexts. The word does not just work towards a child’s survival, but for their ability to thrive in life and in well being.

Terrorized (2006) by Roger Ballen

The unique particularity of the exhibition highlights the importance of joining “childhood” and “art.” Granting children artistic means to explore their self-identity provides them with avenues for self-transcendence. Art allows a child not only to further interact with their environment but to express their emotions, social challenges, and construct their own views of the world around them. Such an imaginative activity provides the child with the necessities to dream and hence to thrive from their own being as well as with those close to them.

Chuckles (2007) by Roger Ballen

Roger Ballen’s photographs are rough and edgy portrayals of what appear to be remnants of childhood abandoned–of children in transient states, desiring to play but also to survive. Such haunting and captivating images echo the need to look more further into the concept of the “boarding house”–into the temporary lodging place on the edge, issues of abandonment and depravity and how perhaps artistic beauty might serve to create a more just society.

Haute Fashion: Holiday Boutique in Beacon Hill for the Best of Boston Shopping
by Kate Dempsey-Stouffer

holiday boutique boston

Don’t let the name mislead you; Holiday, the chic Beacon Hill boutique is not limited to celebratory times of year. You can, and should, make your own special occasion any day by stopping in to browse their collection of women’s clothing, jewelry, and accessories.  They are always well stocked with stylish pieces from top labels such as Leifsdottir, Geren Ford, Hunter Dixon, and AKA New York.

Holiday also boasts its own original designs by owner Jessica Gorenson’s sister, Andrea. The boutique serves as an excellent backdrop to display some of Andrea’s creations in the Holiday Vintage line. You can even place custom orders if you see something you love, but are desperate to walk away with another color or need a slightly different fit. It’s like shopping in your best friend’s closet…with her personal couturier on hand! I picked up a perfect party dress a few months ago: a flashy little number that is simple black on top with bright gold sequins on the bottom. I also walked away from a silk Geren Ford kimono-style dress and have been haunted with regret ever since.

Both Jessica and store manager Kate Botts are happy to talk styles with you, give opinions on what you’re trying on, or help you decide between colors should you need them. They try to focus on carrying pieces that no one else has, to make the shopping experience at Holiday unique. And even though they are never pushy, if they tell you something looks amazing on you, trust them and buy it.  I learned the hard way with my Geren Ford dress, and can only hope they get more at some point.  Until that personal holiday comes for me, I’ll be checking back in to see what styles they have ordered and what new designs they have created.

This week I was smitten with many of their early spring arrivals, including this chic two-toned cocktail dress by Chloe & Reese, and a few flowy blouses by Hunter Dixon and AKA New York.  Take a holiday and stop by!
