La Brea, La Cienega & Beverly Boulevards–these form the trinity of design in Los Angeles. Being as such, they are the most frequented by interior designer outside of the Pacific Design Center (which I covered in Part 1 of my Interior Design Guide). The many unique shops that house everything from furniture and lighting to accessories and antiques on these three streets will more than suffice when you in are on the quest to beautify your home.
La Brea Boulevard: Along an otherwise nondescript stretch of La Brea Boulevard, between Third and Melrose lies a treasure trove of design boutiques.
Start your adventure at Barclay Butera, where you will find Barclay’s signature palette of cool blues accented by rich browns against crisp white interiors. Barclay Butera. 169 North La Brea Ave., 323.634.0200.
Over at Maison Midi–the home furnishings arm of American Rag et Cie, you will find colorful and eclectic mix of accessories for the home, such as traditional French bistro chairs. The true gem at Maison Midi are the Provencal cement tiles in a mix of bold colors against a grayish white background. These will not only hold up well in high traffic areas, such as the kitchen or bath, but are stylish enough for the foyer and even in the courtyard. Maison Midi. 150 South La Brea Ave., 323.935.3154.
La Cienega Boulevard: For more upscale furnishings, trek west across Melrose to La Cienega where fashion meets design. This stylish intersection is home to the biggest names in fashion–Carolina Herrera, Marni, Temperly and Oscar de la Renta–as well the best in L.A.’s home design.
For a great selection of antiques, stop by Lucca Antiques, where you will score that marble topped demi-lune table you desperately need for the downstairs hallway.
Great design definitely needs to be extended outdoors in the warm Mediterranean climate of southern California. And the best resource for garden and outdoor furnishings is Mecox. This Hamptons-based store will amply inspire you to fill your lush home garden with stone fountains, planters and unique treasures for that enchanted environment you want to create. Beverly Boulevard: Hidden amongst the hip eateries lining Beverly Boulevard, are a few notable home furnishings stores. The most significant of them is Heath Ceramics, the Sausalito-based company which has been churning out American-made tiles and tableware for the past 55 years.
