Irving Symphony Orchestra Performs Couture Music at SMU

For the fourth installment of the 2010-2011 Fusion season of the Irving Symphony Orchestra, guests gathered for the premiere of Couture Music at the SMU Caruth Auditorium. The evening featured a unique blend of classical music and couture fashion supplied by Saks Fifth Avenue, creating “music you can see.” The idea behind this unique event is that art begets art, that music was the muse for many fashion designs and vice versa.

Led by Conductor and Music Director Hector Guzman, the ISO performed excerpts from Dvorak, Debussy and Beethoven, while models strutted in unison on a beautifully lit, semi-circled catwalk between the players and the audience. Dallas fashion icon Jan Strimple was behind the fashion portion of the evening, organizing a seamless presentation that came across as almost ethereal, as the models drifted along to the dream-like music.

The ISO then performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto Number 24 in C Minor, inviting distinguished guest Joaquin Achucarro to the stage. His performance, done completely by memory, was breathtaking. The finale featured the most high-end of fashions, as the girls donned couture gowns with high-fashion hair dos.

Special guests included SMU Vice President Brad Cheves, Albert Hunt, Princess Jessica Bowers-Von Hohenberg, Jesse of Austria, Robert Howden, advisor to Governor Perry, Hillary Caruth, Issac Rappaport, Caroline Thorton, Nancy McDermott and Amanda Perot.
