Michael Bay is on our Haute 100 list because he constantly shines in the film industry with his high action flicks.
Michael Bay
Category: Entertainers
Company: Bay Films
Industry: Film
What Made Him Haute: He is one of Hollywood’s most bankable directors, producing action flicks that put him in the limelight and in the black with global ticket sales surpassing the $3 billion mark. “Bad Boys,” “Pearl Harbor” and “Transformers” are among his list of credits, and each film is loaded with his special brand of over-the-top effects. The Hollywood power player uses his home on North Bay Road in Miami Beach as a much-needed sanctuary after the draining filming process. The house itself may be familiar, as it was where the Hogan family lived while filming reality show “Hogan Knows Best.” Bay’s tasteful updates have allowed the estate to exude elegance, as we discovered during a photo shoot with Bay for the cover of Haute Living Los Angeles.
What Makes Him Haute Now: Bay has recently signed on to produce the movie “Gideon’s Sword,” adapted from the Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child novel. He has hired writer Chap Taylor to write the script for Paramount Pictures; the story centers around the life of a man who can convince anybody of anything as he tries to save the world and help his father. Bay plans on including all the high action usually found in his films, while still portraying character development.
Bay also recently transformed a small town in Detroit into a “Transformers 3″ set. Hundreds of individuals came out as Bay filmed his action blockbuster series, and some were fans that even got to meet the director.

Crave AZ, which we wrote about back in August, has been moved from late October to January 2011. We know, we’re bummed, too. But there’s good news: Crave: The Pre-Party will still be held Oct. 23, allowing revelers the opportunity to experience a taste of all the culinary excellence yet to come.
In an effort to accommodate new major sponsors, Crave AZ pushed its big event back three months, but that doesn’t mean you don’t still have plans that weekend. Crave: The Pre-Party will take place at the Calvin Charles Gallery, beginning at 7 p.m., in the downtown Scottsdale Arts District. There will be live jazz by Dennis Rowland and nosh by restaurant 5th and Wine, including custom-crafted beers by the SanTan Brewing Company, as well as magnum vintage wines. Tickets will be $20 per person in advance or $25 at the door, and can be purchased through the event’s site.
Next year, for January, you’ll want to save the following dates for the real Crave AZ event:
- Elixirs at the Loft at The Chef’s Loft on SouthBridge, featuring two back-to-back events: Battle of the Sexes, a wine tasting encounter, and the National Top Bar Chef Mix-Off (Friday, Jan. 28)
- Decanted — A VIP Reserve Wine Tasting, held outdoors under the stars on SouthBridge (Saturday, Jan. 29)
- Crave AZ Grand Tasting on SouthBridge (Sunday, Jan. 30)
The 2011 event will mark the third annual Crave AZ, featuring more than 40 local, independent restaurants and more than 200 vineyards. Purchase tickets through the event’s site.
The Calvin Charles Gallery is located at 4201 N. Marshall Way in Scottsdale Crave AZ

Duarte, Calif., ranks No. 1 on Forbes' America's Most Expensive ZIP Codes list, where the median cost of a home is $4,276,462.
Beverly Hills, 90210 was so 1990s, so don’t get me started on what I think of CW’s refurbished Dylan McKay-less series of America’s most famous ZIP code. But perhaps Hollywood should shop around the idea of a new Los Angeles-based show by the name of Duarte, 91008, considering it’s the hautest spot for multimillion-dollar mansions.
Where the median cost on a house is $4,276,462, the small suburb north of downtown Los Angeles tops Forbes’ latest annual ranking of America’s Most Expensive ZIP Codes. However, Duarte’s small town numbers (pop. 1,391) and the $19.8 million mansion listed on the market may have skewed the rankings. Alpine, N.J., which boasted the No. 1 spot on last year’s list slipped to No. 4 this time around.
If the idea of living in the richest spot in America appeals to you, then act fast as there are only 12 homes currently on the market in Duarte. But hopefully you don’t mind settling for rank No. 2 and No. 3 of the richest ZIP codes: 94027 (Atherton in the Bay Area) and 90274 (Rolling Hills in Palos Verdes Hills), respectively. Not surprisingly, the West Village (10014) holds the most expensive real estate in Manhattan, where the median price of a home is $3,785,445 and ranks fifth on Forbes’ list. Our beloved Beverly Hills, 90210 falls at No. 6 where the median price for a home is $3,283,269.
But where does Miami fall on the list? Where the median cost of a house is $2,295,291, ZIP 33109, the exclusive Fisher Island, makes No. 37 spot Forbes’ America’s Most Expensive ZIP Codes. See the complete list here.

About 80 percent of fruits and vegetables we use at The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco come from the farmers’ market. I try to go to the Marin Civic Center Farmers’ Market a couple times a week because I like to pick out the produce myself. It gives me the opportunity to see what’s available—see if the peaches are actually ripe. I go in the morning, come home, clean up, and then head to work.
What produce is available at the market drives our menu and sets the tone for the whole week. I’ll see big bunches of beautiful grapes and know I need to get them. I might not know how to use them initially, but we always figure it out.
This week for example, there were many ripe varieties of apples and radishes that spanned the market. Everything looked so appetizing that I picked out several of each kind. From that trip, I created a brand new dish that could utilize the produce gathered—a slow-cooked suckling pig with grape juice. I simply chopped up the apples and radishes, tossed with olive oil, added the mixture right on top of the meat, and voila! A new menu item was created.
So the next time you head to your local farmers’ market, go in with an open mind. Scan and see what’s available. Oftentimes, the small farmers have the more interesting selections. There are so many options, so be adventurous with your cooking.
