Mmm… can’t you just smell the aroma? There is nothing like a fresh baked…anything! In recent years, the gourmet cupcake explosion has taken over America, and nowhere more passionately than Los Angeles. Our city has a patchwork of impressive ethnic bakeries—Bea’s in Tarzana, Baklava Factory and Porto’s in Glendale (and Burbank), Goldilocks in Filipinotown and Eagle Rock, Phoenix in Chinatown—specialty spots from Pasadena’s Gourmet Cobbler Factory to Culver City’s Gotta Have S’more…but you want a Haute 5, don’t you?
1 Buttercake Bakery
Balancing between homespun and haute, Buttercake offers classic layer cakes, elegant Bundts, festive cupcakes, scones, bars, and tarts (above) that you may just be able to convince your friends you made yourself. I wont tell.
2 DeLuscious Cookies & Milk
3 The Village Bakery and Cafe
With offerings like the “to die for” Lemon-Rosemary-Almond-Olive Oil cake, chocolate red wine cake (take that, Red Velvet!) bacon-maple and apricot-ginger scones and fresh cannoli, no wonder the East Side is buzzing about this Atwater Village spot. Breakfast and lunch look yummy too.
4 Rosebud Cakes
5 Cake & Art
For something really outlandish, bizarre, even rather explicit, you want to visit Cake & Art, which has so many celebrity endorsements… Britney Spears, Rhianna, Hayden Panettiere, Khloe Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Mila Kunis (disclosure: I brought her there, above) just to name the very hottest. They also have some of the best cupcakes in town. Give Cody my regards.
