Sugar High: The Haute 5 Bakeries in Dallas

Pssst….over here. You smell something? It’s freshness, coming to you live from the Dallas metroplex bakeries. If you’re looking for the creme de la creamy, here’s the best local spots.

Society Bakery

Roshi Muns knows buns. And cupcakes, cookies and all things fresh from the oven. In 2003 she founded Society Bakery, referring to their business model that gives back to society–over 85 charities, schools and non-profits, in fact. Basically, you can satiate your sweet tooth while you’re sweetening the soul. Does it get better than that?

eatZi’s

Imagine wandering in to a market and bakery on the streets of Paris. You can smell the baguettes in the oven, and traverse the rows of fresh produce, cheeses and meats. It’s a little like heaven, isn’t it? eatZi’s thinks so, which is why they made it their mission to bring the European experience to Dallas. Everything, from the wide selection of wines to the artisan breads and salad station, is of superb quality and freshness. It’s your one-stop shop for a workday lunch or a shopping trip for an elegant dinner.

Breadwinners Cafe and Bakery

Known all over town for their weekend brunch, Breadwinners is first and foremost a cafe and bakery. Cakes, pies, cheesecakes, brownies and cookies…and don’t forget their savory breads and fruit dishes. And with three locations as well as their sister shop the Quarter Bar (more beer than baked goods,) odds are you’ve got one in your neighborhood.

La Duni

It doesn’t get more mom and pop than La Duni, although wife Duni Borga focuses mostly on the sweet while Taco Borga does the savory. The result is a blend of confectionery and culinary brilliance that few in Dallas haven’t tried and loved. Duni is also a master of wedding cakes, creating delectable visions for any theme, color scheme or guest list.

Tiff’s Treats

Cookie monsters rave about Tiff’s, who make their dough from scratch and deliver their goodies in foil-lined boxes to ensure warm gooeyness. The brainchild of a couple UT students in Austin, the cookie shop has made it’s way north to Dallas, much to the delight of we Texas alums. A must-try: The TiffWich, stuffing two of Tiff’s fresh cookies with Blue Bell ice cream.

As with most cities, finding a decent cup of coffee can be somewhat of a task in Dallas. Discovering the perfect espresso is even more of a feat. You'd rather guzzle gasoline than succumb to a quick stop at Starbucks, and the mom and pop shops lack that European classiness one gets while enjoying an...

In Dallas, it seems like just as you get used to a restaurant - the menu, the service, the wait on weekends and the specialty cocktails - another enterprising eatery pops up that you simply must try. We may not be the culinary epicenter of the world, or even the continental U.S., but we do just fine...
