The fashion industry showcases its newest designs in September and February during Fashion Week. A parade of new styles, designs and colors walk the runways of New York, Paris, Milan and London. But home decor has its own fashion week, Las Vegas Market, going on now at the World Market Center in Las Vegas. Just like the fashion industry, home decor goes through phases with new trends popping up.
Paul Watson, the director of business development for the Las Vegas Design Center at the World Market Center, culled through the new selections from design firms to pull out the five hottest trends. Brush up on these new trends before doing your home furnishings shopping. The design center reopens Aug. 10, when you can shop for yourself.
In Love with Lucite
Back in the 1950s and ’60s, Lucite found its way onto jewelry. Then in the ‘70s and ‘80s, it dominated the home decor scene. Now the clear material makes a comeback in tables, chairs, accessories, lighting and more. Watson recommends the Invisible Chair available at H. Studio/Haziza located in the design center. “Purely simple. Geometric lines and design encased through clear acrylic. It’s an illusion of invisibility made present by functional art,” Watson says. The pieces are available in 12 colors.
Old Becomes New
Many of the new looks today have a feeling of yesteryear. “We are seeing traditional silhouettes recreated or intermixed with contemporary motifs,” Watson says. He cites a reproduction console and curio from Kindel Furniture’s Dorothy Draper Collection, available in the Robert Allen Beacon Hill showroom in the design center. While this inside back panel is shown in coral, it is available with a contrasted painted finish of your choice.
Punch of Color
Designers are turning to splashes of color to update a room instead of painting all the walls. Look for color and texture on decorative accessories, such as picture frames, wall décor and throws. The trend lets you change the look of your room as the trends change, Watson says. Above, the Lazy Susan Worn Beach Glass Bowl adds a bright, summery aqua color to the home year-round. It is available at Dillon-Wells at the design center.
Reclaimed Antiques
The eco-friendly movement has found its way into the home through reclaimed and repurposed woods. These natural ways to update a room feature stunning patinas and unique characteristics that can become a conversation piece in your home, Watson says. These cabinets from the Hughes Collection in the Four Hands showroom at the design center are made from 90 percent reclaimed pine and deliver functionality with an inspired historical design in a stripped-down raw finish.
Bring the Indoors Outside
Now your backyard is more than just a space between homes. Outdoor lounges, living rooms and kitchens make your home feel like a private resort. This upholstered outdoor collection from Lee Industries has a modern look while it stands up to the elements. You can find it in the Jordan Spencer showroom at the design center.
The Las Vegas Design Center at World Market Center features fine furniture, decorative accessories, wall décor, lighting, floor coverings, fabrics and trim. The design center is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
