Perhaps it’s the green light to enjoy a pint of Guinness before work that makes The Fox and Anchor such a jovial place for breakfast. This beautifully restored pub has been serving traders from the nearby Smithfield meat market since 1898. Breakfasts are gargantuan, especially if you order the Full Monty—a plate with at least ten items, including sausage, bacon, kidneys, eggs, beans, black pudding, and fried bread, along with unlimited tea or coffee, toast, jam and to up your iron intake: a pint of Guinness. Of course, more delicate stomachs might settle for smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. The Fox and Anchor is noted for its fine English ales, which are all available at breakfast. There are a number of ways to cool down in Phoenix during the summer months – pool parties, chilled cocktails, jumping into a bath of ice … but frozen yogurt is our fave and by far the absolute yummiest. We’ve compiled for you the top 10 places to enjoy this light and healthy frozen treat around the Valley.
10. A Touch of Yogurt
A fixture in Downtown Phoenix since 1987, A Touch of Yogurt serves up not just frozen yogurt, but also sorbets, smoothies and Italian ices. All flavors are non-fat and at least one “no sugar added” flavor is available daily. You can download calendars for upcoming months on the shop’s site to discover which flavors will be available on which days.
9. Yogurt Builderz
Located in North Scottsdale, Yogurt Builderz is a self-serve shop offering both ice cream and frozen yogurt. There are lots of fresh toppings to choose from, but what we really love is that they stay open until 11 p.m. seven days a week, making post-dinner dessert runs a snap. Check out their “Only 8″ flavors, containing just 8 ounces per ounce.
8. Yogurtology
Another self-serve shop, Yogurtology prides itself on delivering treats that are “simple, clean and delicious,” the “clean” aspect meaning not just spotless counters and a lack of wayward toppings strewn about by careless tween-agers, but also the fact that all the ingredients, such as fruit, are as fresh as possible, hand-cut and replenished throughout the day. The enterprise has two locations in the Valley, with at least three more soon on the way.
7. Zen Zen Yogurt
Situated in the shopping center at 44th Street and Indian School Road (and just a few steps away from Pita Jungle, we might add), Zen Zen Yogurt opened this past spring. Another shop of the self-serve variety, this shop stocks both sweet and tart flavors in order to please everyone, regardless of which camp of fro-yo-tology you might be in. They also offer dairy-free and gluten-free selections.
6. Mojo Yogurt
Mojo Yogurt, which has four locations throughout the Valley, promises that all its frozen yogurt is 100-percent fat-free. More than 28 flavors are offered each day, and the tart ones are really excellent here, including the strawberry, mango, pomegranate and raspberry. After you build your concoction, if you’d rather have it in smoothie form, just hand your cup to the attendant and he or she will blend it for you right there on the spot.
5. Golden Spoon
We’re aware many frozen yogurt shops tend to garner cult followings that rival that of the Twilight fan base (on second thought, maybe nothing could ever rival that), but Golden Spoon’s customers are a particularly loyal bunch. The company has more than 105 locations across the U.S., and 10 in the Phoenix area. They specialize in frozen yogurt exclusively, so you won’t find any other treats in their shops, but you will find two dozen different flavors and five serving size options, plus three kinds of cones. Customers are served by an attendant from behind the counter, and the customer service is stellar.
4. Red Mango
Located in North Scottsdale, Red Mango emphasizes that each of its frozen yogurts is all-natural, fat-free and gluten-free, containing no artificial ingredients or added sugars. You have four flavors to choose from: Original, Pomegranate, Madagascar Vanilla and a rotating “flavor of the day.” The toppings, while not all all-natural themselves, are creative choices and even include Fruity Pebbles. This attractive store also serves parfaits and smoothies.
3. Yogurtland
With four locations in the Valley, including one practically just across the street from Scottsdale Fashion Square and one on the ASU campus, Yogurtland seems to have the young crowd on lockdown when it comes to frozen yogurt. The stores are super cute, brightly colored, clean, self-serve and feature an endless rotating menu of fun flavors. For newbies to fro-yo, this place offers an ideal first-timer’s experience.
2. Yogurberry
While some Yogurberry locations in the U.S. are supposedly self-serve, the two locations here in the Valley (Gilbert and Glendale) are not. Instead, you’re served your frozen yogurt or smoothie by a friendly, smiling member of their staff who will ring you up for a dollar amount that will put some spring in your step, as this shop is a little better priced that others in the Phoenix metro area. We also give them points for using recycled materials and supporting environmental organizations.
1. Cherry on Top
The incredibly unique flavors found at Cherry on Top make this shop our favorite of all the frozen yogurt stands in Phoenix. At either of their two locations, both in North Scottsdale, try the Margarita Sorbet (non-alcoholic), Pina Colada (non-alcoholic), Oatmeal Cookie, Chai Latte, Lychee Tart, Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Praline, Eggnog or Taro, plus any of the usual staples, such as Green Tea, Pomegranate-Blueberry, Strawberry, Vanilla and others. The majority of flavors are non-fat, with also a few low-fat and no sugar added options as well. You’ll find all your favorite toppings, alongside a few you maybe wouldn’t have expected, such as Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
Now that’s a lot of frozen yogurt!

You can tell Second Floor Restaurant Chef J. Chastain likes to play mad scientist.
In fact, the scenario on Friday evenings is almost like one of those eerie, preternatural stories that take place in some dark castle: Chastain, usually chained in the back of the restaurant in the Westin Galleria, ordering around his minions who dutifully craft the delectable dishes that are whisked away into the dining area of the restaurant or upstairs to patrons ordering room service, emerges on this night and creates his laboratory in the bar. It takes hours to prepare all the potions and legal poisons for the event to come, and you can imagine him wringing his hands in anticipation, holding a test tube up to the light and declaring “It’s alive!”
Perhaps this slightly over-dramatizes the new Molecular Mixology event that is now being showcased at the Second Floor Friday evenings, but I promise upon closer inspection you will not be disappointed. As specialty cocktails go, we in Dallas have seen our fair share, so it’s got to be more than smoke and mirrors to give us a shock. Whatever that is, Chastain’s got it by the boat load, and most of it comes by way of a giant jug of liquid nitrogen.
“I was against it at first,” says Chastain of the concept of bringing nitrogen into the kitchen. “I didn’t think my clientele base would be in to it.” That didn’t stop him from having fun with it, however, creating strange concoctions with various culinary ingredients, whatever popped into his head. But wasn’t it unfortunate that such grand productions would be lost in translation if made in the kitchen, considering dishes like candied popcorn tossed in nitrogen don’t stay smoking long (an example of one of Chastain’s crazy amuse-bouches, which if eaten fast enough will cause you to breathe cool smoke out of your nose.) So the obvious choice was to showcase the newfound gastro-molecular goodness bar side, where guests can ooh and aah at their smoking cocktails and strawberry caviar.
Seriously. Strawberry caviar. It’s the defining moment for the Strawberries and Cremant cocktail, one of five creations listed on the menu, which comes complete with Albrecht French Champagne. Here’s a little insight on how the caviar is made: you take some strawberry puree mixed with calcium chloride, inject it through a sort of plastic cheese grater that forms the mixture into tiny balls, and then you drop it into a batch of sodium alginate. This makes tiny little jelly balls of strawberries, which Chastain will then add to your champagne. Voila! Now you can do it at home, right?
I feel your pain. As someone who failed chemistry miserably I am completely lost in all this shop talk. Thankfully you don’t have to take a test here, just kick back, sip a Nitrogen Car Bomb and enjoy the show.
It’s reservation only for the event, so call The Second Floor at 972.450.2978 to schedule your cocktail hour for this Friday evening. Starts at 6 p.m. The Second Floor, 13340 Dallas Parkway, www.thesecondfloorrestaurant.com

There are some big changes going on at the good ole’ Aventura Mall. Two of the world’s premier fashion retailers, Burberry and Façonnable, open this summer at the mall, while one of the shopping center’s most successful brands, Diesel, debuts a new, expanded location.
Burberry will open a 3,500-square-foot boutique on July 30. Since its founding in England in 1856, Burberry has been synonymous with quality – as defined by the endurance, classicism and functionality that characterized its history as the outfitter of choice for explorers who pioneered aviation and arctic exploration. Burberry today is leveraging the strength of its heritage by continually promoting design innovation, reinventing its icons to enhance their aspirational appeal, balancing its classic sensibility with modernity and infusing quality with style to make its core values relevant for now and future generations. Located on the first level of Center Court, Burberry will offer men’s and women’s clothing, as well as accessories and shoes. Which is great considering I’m totally in need for a new purse.
Featuring a full range of men’s and women’s tailored clothing, as well as accessories, the 3,000-square-foot Façonnable boutique boasts the brand’s newly devised retail concept – a French Riviera-inspired blueprint that features blue and beige accents, chevron-patterned unfinished white oak floors, and honey-colored oak paneling, paired with limestone and millwork that channels the spirit of 1930’s French decorator, Jean Michel Frank. Façonnable was founded in the 1950s by Jean Goldberg, immediately becoming one of the most celebrated internal menswear brands worldwide. Authenticity, instinct and talent, the values at the heart of Façonnable, continue to express the signature of “modern elegance.” Façonnable opened July 16 on the first level near Nordstrom.
Diesel will move August 19 to a new, expanded location on the first level next to its previous store. The design concept for the 6,148-square-foot space will increase mobility and flexibility so that customers have a truly unique experience. The store’s interior will display modern aesthetics and a bright, fun atmosphere emulating the spirit of the Miami market. Energy efficient solar panels will be used throughout the store as well as polycarbonates and antique oak. The solar panel façade will draw power from the mall’s overhead natural lighting, illuminating the Diesel sign above the entrance. Accessories fixtures will also have solar panels that draw power from the store’s overhead lighting which illuminates LED lights that spotlight the merchandise inside. Not only innovative in design, the system conserves energy to reduce the day to day energy consumption of the store.
Located at 19501 Biscayne Boulevard, the mall is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 8 p.m. For more information call 305.935.1110, visit the website at www.aventuramall.com.
