Annual Summer Family Night at SMoCA

Presenting a fun way to bring the joys of art and culture to the Valley’s wee folk, the SMoCA encourages families of all ages to head to the museum for a memorable evening, featuring live music by the band Jeff Jones and Earth Tones and refreshments. There will also be bubbles and a hands-on art project for the kids to participate in, ensuring even the littlest ones are able to join in the celebration. And don’t miss the outdoor fountain, which is sure to provide just as much amusement for the supervising adults as it will entertainment for all the water-loving kids. Bring swimsuits, towels, and any other necessary water gear so your little art enthusiasts won’t miss out on any of the action.

Appropriately, currently on display at the SMoCA and available for viewing that evening is an exhibition that children are sure to find particularly enjoyable. The museum describes Spyhopping: Adventures with Sue Chenoweth as “part board game come to life, part art installation.” The Phoenix-based artist’s bright colors and uniquely imaginative scenes draw inspiration from eclectic sources, including an old Italian board game called The Game of Goose, and “spyhopping,” a behavior displayed by gray whales. The resulting paintings are transportive, capable of creating the kind of environment in which the fantastic seems possible. Children will love the opportunity to narrate the paintings for their parents and point out their favorites.

Annual Summer Family Night at SMoCA will begin at 5:15 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. Space is limited to prevent over-crowding, so pre-registration is required. RSVP no later than July 15 by calling 480.874.4641. The cost is $20 for a family of four, and $4 for each additional family member.

Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 7374 E. Second Street in Downtown Scottsdale
