PBS Series Documents the History of Watchmaking and Features Westime

By Christina Bohnstengel on May 24th, 2010

We told you about it on Friday, but with weekend soirees filling up the schedules, we thought it apropos to remind you once again that beginning today, Westime, the LA luxury watch retailer, will be featured on Insights HD, the PBS documentary series with Hugh Downs.

There is a nine-minute preview available on YouTube, and we took a sneak peek at it to check out what audiences have in store. The program delves into the history of what is described as the “painstaking craft of watchmaking,” up through the time in recent history when quartz technology revolutionized the industry and allowed for the mass production of watches to nearly kill off the skill and respect for the craft. But as the documentary states, some independent watchmakers not only survived through this dark period in the history of the industry, but also thrived. Embracing the technologies of our modern age has created the opportunity for a whole new chapter in mechanical watchmaking, enabling a better level of precision. Some of today’s luxury timepieces are crafted with more parts than an automobile, making this documentary definite must-see TV.

Westime President Greg Simonian, Greubel Forsey Co-founder Stephen Forsey, and timepiece collector Youriy Iliev all offer their expert insights for the program, and Westime’s two LA locations are also featured.

“Complicated, mechanical watches represent centuries of history plus the very latest advances in engineering, design and artistry,” says Greg Simonian, president of Westime. “Westime is proud to take part in a documentary that shows a whole new audience what makes these very special timepieces tick.”

This special episode will air all week long, with varying schedule times, so check your PBS local listings to find out when you can view it because we are fairly certain this is one that you won’t want to miss.
