Fête Memorial Day Weekend at Southampton Inn
by Diana Gdula

Dive into summer with a Memorial Day weekend poolside BBQ bash. If you’ve been patiently anticipating the kickoff to summer in the Hamptons, then get ready to fête the Hamptons 2010 season, starting on Saturday, May 29, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Southampton Inn, your idyllic East End escape.

Say salud to the Southampton summer sun, and to the Southampton Inn’s recently renovated pool and dining courtyard. After about eight months of frigid temps, nothing can pacify your hankering for the radiant outdoors more so than a refreshing dip in the pool and al fresco dining, unless it’s sunbathing poolside with a cooling White Grape Mojito, or Sweet Summer Tea in hand. (We know…the sun leaves us parched too.) Whatever your open air pleasure under the luminous azure sky, the Southampton Inn has you covered on all bases.

Drive far, far away from the bustle of the city, and opt for 72-hours of fun-in-the-sun with fine food and drinks on more-than-five acres of manicured lawns and lushly landscaped grounds at the perfect home-away-from-home in Southampton. Sure sounds better than your 9 – 5 gig, doesn’t it? The Southampton Inn is authorizing guests to indulge in classic dishes, crafted with an innovative take on barbeque fare with a local twist. Gratify your holiday appetite with all-American spare ribs, sliced sirloin with Wölfer Estate Merlot demi-glace, and Long Island littleneck clams with Valencia fruit broth. There’s plenty for tots (and sweet-toothed adults) too, like molten fudge brownies, blondies, black & white cookies, and the taste of traditional summer with sliced watermelon.

Cancel your order on those rose-colored shades, life is just peachy in the Hamptons. Splash into the casual-chic allure of the Hamptons and let a summer of effortless style commence at Southampton Inn.

A Natural Affair with Global Green USA’s 14th Annual Millennium Awards
by Diana Gdula

Sure summertime beckons many summer affairs, not involving the pool boy, but rather elegant minglings of society and style celebrating the glorious summer sun. And while you’ve probably already put away your LBD’s (for their immediate return in fall, of course) in exchange for white and bright beach-y frocks in anticipation of the people and parties surrounding the Hamptons, sailboats, poolside galas, and chic-attire barbecues (which only a social order akin to your elite tastes could pull off), cool your Gucci’s, opt for a nature-al bauble, and save the date for a green cause, Global Green USA’s 14th Annual Millennium Awards on Saturday, June 12.

Global Green USA will honor outstanding environmental leaders at its 14th Annual Millennium Awards at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. Celebrity guests and leaders from the Hollywood, business, and environmental communities will gather to raise funds to support the organization’s initiatives to rebuild a green New Orleans; to create green affordable housing and green schools in Los Angeles, throughout California and nationally; and to continue to advocate for innovative and effective policy initiatives to combat climate change.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson will deliver the keynote address, while honorees will include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the University of California System, and the W Hollywood Hotel & Residences, all acknowledged for their lives and careers exemplifying Global Green USA’s mission of  “fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure world.” This year’s esteemed Global Green’s Millennium Awards are chaired by Bob Bucklin, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jim Gianopulos, Tom Roell, Tom Rothman, Diane Meyer Simon and co-chaired by Sebastian Copeland, Salma Hayek, Zem Joaquin, Lyn & Norman Lear, Pat Mitchell & Scott Seydel, Ann & Jerry Moss, and Lynda & Stuart Resnick.

Global Green USA, the national leader in advocating for smart solutions to climate change, is benefitting humanity by saving energy, reducing CO2 emissions, improving health, creating green jobs, and securing a more sustainable future, so amongst time spent honing your nautical skills, anchor yourself at an event honoring some naturals.

amfAR San Francisco 2010 Gala

In support of amfAR, the elegant Italian brand Marlowe welcomed fashionistas and debutantes in the Bay Area to celebrate “amfAR’s San Francisco 2010 Gala,” hosted by Jenna & Bryant Hunt, alongside Maggie Rizer & Alex Mehran. The stylish soiree included a cocktail reception in which guests enjoyed a day of fashion in the luxurious boutique.

Marlowe is making their debut in San Francisco but is no stranger to clothing connoisseurs; the boutique is a welcomed arrival to the Union Square family. The success of Marlowe rests on the fact that the brand has become synonymous with versatility, providing shoppers with trendy threads that transcend seasons and give the wearer alternating options.

Haute 100 San Francisco Update: Carol Bartz

Our Haute 100 list details the accomplishments of the most influential people in each of our markets—Miami, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. These people continue to make moves, so rather than waiting for the next Haute 100 issue to come out, we thought we’d provide you with regular updates on those Haute 100 members who are making headlines. Check back daily for more info on the most powerful people in your city. Today, we are happily featuring Yahoo! exec and apparent badass Carol Bartz, who caused quite a bit of contravercy this week when she told a reporter from Tech Crunch to “F**k off,” cementing her rep as a woman not to be messed with.

Carol Bartz
Category: Entrepreneurs
Company: Yahoo!
Industry: Technology
What MADE Her Haute: She’s been serving as the CEO and director of Yahoo! since 2006. Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, Yahoo! is one of the most enduring brands to come out of Silicon Valley. Bartz is focused on small acquisitions and opportunities for Yahoo! to open up to new demographics.

What Makes Her Haute Now: Bartz was profiled by Esquire’s Cal Fussman in last month’s “Women” issue, and my admiration for her increased tenfold  after reading the piece. In the intro, Fussman writes, “One year into her role as CEO of Yahoo!, Bartz has proven herself to be aggressive, foulmouthed, and utterly likable.” Those first two qualities bubbled to the surface this week at TechCrunch Disrupt in New York City, when Bartz joined TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington for a fireside chat that quickly got…unpleasant. She has only been with Yahoo! one year, and while things are looking up for the company, Arrington was pressing her for not making more of an impact. Her response:

CB: Steve Jobs came back to Apple in 1997 — the iPod came out 4 years later. 3 years after that is the first time his market cap grew. It took 7 years. I’ve been here a few months. Give me a break. You are involved in a very tiny company.

MA: Very tiny.

CB: It probably takes you a long time just to convince yourself what to do. “So fuck off!”

Cassandria Blackmore Opens San Francisco Studio

Born with severe dyslexia, world-renowned artist Cassandria Blackmore transformed her disability into a tool she has utilized for several years, developing a style all her own in which she essentially paints backwards, even her signature is backwards. Her distinct use of glass as canvass and her ability to think outside of the typical modes of painting and creating art, she has established herself as a premier artist and has been recognized with various awards.

In celebration of her return to the Bay Area, guests were invited to visit her storefront studio at 1906 Fillmore Street, where Blackmore hopes to engage the public in her work. Attendees entered the studio, where lifeless white walls were brought to life by the inspirational creations that have made Cassandria Blackmore so relevant and enjoyed cocktails as well as the opportunity to converse with the artist herself.

Whitney Library Fellows Host End-of-Year Celebration

The private residence of contemporary artist Michele Oka Doner and her husband Frederick Doner swarmed with members and friends of the Library Fellows of the Whitney Museum of American Art for the “End of Year Celebration.” With cocktails in hand, guests perused throughout the home of Mr. and Mrs. Doner, admiring shelves stocked with books on art, philosophy, and nature, as well as numerous well-worn years of the National Geographic.

Attendees also explored the host’s studio filled with unfinished works; while her living room housed many signature pieces including ceramics, wax sculptures, metal sculptures, and other collection items, there was even a selection of artifacts spread across a table top display.

Co-chairs, Michele Gerber Klein and Fiona Donovan were amongst the crowd enjoying the evening, others in attendance included Joanne Cassullo, Chauncie McKeever, Peter M. Wolf, Ilona and Chad Oppenheim, Michel Witmer, Ann and Alfred Ruesch, Mike Latham, Steve and Sandy Abramson, Susan Kappa, Joan and Marc Sherman. The evening also included a delicious dinner catered by “At Your Service” and consisted of roasted asparagus, potatoes au gratin, salad, and a poached salmon encrute with brown rice and spinach.

Shuffle Up and Deal: The World Series of Poker Kicks Off at the Rio

In Rounders, Matt Damon’s character Mike McDermott has a dream: to make it to the final table at the World Series of Poker, the ultimate poker tournament pitting the best players in the world against relative nobodies like Chris Moneymaker who can come out of nowhere to win it all.

Poker has become such a huge industry that ESPN, Bravo and the Travel Channel now dedicate hours of programming to the World Series of Poker and its many variations. But you can see it firsthand as the 41st annual World Series of Poker kicks off tomorrow at the Rio. The biggest names in the game compete for ultimate bragging rights in a highly exclusive $50,000 buy-in Players’ Championship.

The hard part to understand is that the tournament combines eight variations of poker to identify the game’s best overall player. On Saturday at noon, thousands of poker players and fans head to the Rio for a $1,000 buy-in event that requires two days to seat all entrants. You can watch this event for free.

But it’s the Friday night event that draws the big guns. World Series of Poker champion Doyle Brunson leads the $50,000 Players’ Championship at 5 p.m. Look for Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Scotty Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, Annie Duke, Jennifer Harman and others as they compete for the coveted WSOP championship bracelet.

Also during the weekend you can check out the $1,000 No Limit Hold ‘em events starting at noon Saturday and Sunday.

The 57-event tournament runs through July 17, with the final table of the Main Event returning on Nov. 6. More than 60,000 players from 115 countries entered the 2009 tournament in Las Vegas. Last year, Joe Cada, pictured above, took home $8.5 million in prize money when he won the championship event. He’s also the youngest player to ever win the tournament.
