Anna Sui: The Life and Times of the Designing Woman

This is your chance for a glimpse into the life of Anna Sui. The American born, New School-educated fashion designer has been designing boho-esque prints for the fashion crowd since the early 90s, when her super pals, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista encouraged her to debut her first runway show. Sui has always been a bit of a recluse, barely exhibiting a wave at the finale of her New York runway shows (lets not mistake that with being ungrateful), so this tome is a welcome announcement.

Chronicle Books is publishing the book, which will tell the story of her career in fashion—from her collaboration with all of the supers (models, that is), rock goddesses, and boho gals. Four hundred images will unravel the great life and career of Sui, which is for the most part written by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton—Sui wrote the forward; the preface is written by Jack White of the White Stripes (whose wife just so happens to be Karen Elson, longtime model of Sui’s designs); and Steven Meisel penned the intro.

Sui plans to take this retrospective book on the road, with an international launch, events, television appearances, and online marketing. That’s quite the amount of attention for a woman that casually walks on and off her runway without a victorious bow. But for Sui the journey of reliving her life and career through words has been redefining. “The process of compiling and reliving favorite memories from my career was very gratifying,” says Sui.
