The impact of men’s fashion is often underestimated in comparison to the openly style conscious female. We’re so used to seeing the monotonous black business uniform that we easily forget about the art of the tailor-made suit, silk tie, cashmere sweater, cuff-links, and elegant dress shirts. While men are seemingly more subdued when it comes to talking about fashion, they certainly recognize the importance of the looking suave, stylish, and sleek especially here in Dubai. Whether going out on the town, to a fancy restaurant, or hitting the golf course with friends, the following the men’s boutiques in Dubai are classy, modern, and popular among expatriates and local Emiratis.
Hatem Alakeel
Quickly becoming one of the foremost Gulf designers, the young Saudi designer Hatem Alakeel has changed to the image of the traditional Arabic “thobe.” The tunic-like garment is ankle-length with sleeves and is traditionally worn by men of the Arabian peninsula including Egypt and Morocco. Hatem launched his first line of Menswear at the Dubai Fashion in 2008 and ever since his designs have been a hit. He named this line “Toby” which translates into Arabic “Tobe” referring to a common Arabic expression “Al Basmin Thoby” meaning “I wear my own style.” Hatem was educated in Europe and the United States but feels proudly for his Middle Eastern roots. The lack of individual style in traditional Arabic menswear prompted him to create such a line. Hatem has now designed sports pants and T-shirts for wear outside of the home. Hatem’s Toby line are elegant and versatile and can easily be worn for a variety of occasions.

Canali
One of the most popular brands in Dubai for high-end menswear is the Italian brand Canali. Specialized in luxury menswear and accessories, Canali uses the natural fibers of the best quality an often such materials are made exclusively for Canali. The boutique dates back to 1934 when brothers Giovanni and Giacome Canali established an artisan workshop in the city of Brianza in Lombardy for the production of high quality clothing. By the mid-1970s Canali was run by the second generation of the family and specialized in men’s outerwear. The 1980s consolidated Canali’s international presence and ever since the brand has become a favorite for luxury menswear.

Dos Diablos is yet another new addition to the already poppin’ and rockin’ Hubbard Street, bringing a little flair from South of the border. Aiming to be your new locale for frozen margaritas and sizzling fajitas, they appear to have their fiesta in full gear.
Brought to you by Bortz Entertainment Group (the force behind local spots Sangria, Republic, Boutique and Cabaret, which closed at this address last year) the three amigos co-owners Marc Bortz, Todd Rubin, and John Merlo aren’t putting a big name chef in the kitchen so you can focus on the authentic Mexican flavors and creative combination’s.
With flaming Mexican Saganaki (panela cheese ablaze with lime and tequila), nachos served in a paella pan and chocolate tamales, the menu stand out is the Big Mel, a three and a half pound chimichanga loaded with sour cream, salsa verde and cheese galore. For all you competitive eaters out there or folks who just like a challenge, if you somehow manage to finish the beast in less than 20 minutes without having a heart attack, it’s on the house.
With serious potions and crazy food combination’s, the decor is nothing to sneeze at either. Adorned with jeweled lanterns and antique wood and copper bars, this cantina is ready to kick it up a notch. Claiming to have the most potent margaritas in town, there is a three drink limit on whatever secret ingredient they threw in the mix.
That sounds like another challenge to me. Just say the devil made me do it.
Dos Diablos, 15 W Hubbard St. in Chicago.
Economy shnomony. The grass is always greener, especially when you are perusing the real estate ads just to get a “glimpse of the market.” But when you see that oh-so perfect, 12,000 square-foot beauty with the salt water pool and solarium that’s currently running a fraction what you paid for that trendy tudor style condo FIVE years ago, your skin starts to itch, and you get that familiar feeling of missing out on the big one. Luckily, there are a LOT of haute homes right this minute for sale in University Park, an astonishing 80 are currently listed, actually. Here’s a few of the highlights.

One and a half acres cropping up against the lush greenery of Turtle Creek, this is truly a one of a kind find in Dallas. Running a cool $18 million, this five bedroom, five bath oasis is complete with a wine cellar, pool, indoor fire pit and salt water aquarium. The open floor plan, high ceilings and modernistic architecture by Frank Welch allows plenty of light and space with an ultra-cool feel.

They say behind every great man is a great woman. While I am hardly one to disagree with that old adage, I would like to add one thing: a stylist. Yes, even the most powerful, put together men need help in the style department, in fact that’s probably why they always look so debonair in the first place. Sure, thank Sally for her years of love and support, but how about Sam and those perfectly lined trousers? You know you wouldn’t have gotten the promotion otherwise. Luckily, Dallas is not to be out done in the way of fashion- regardless of who’s wearing the pants in the relationship.
J Hilburn
We may never know how many executive decisions were made over pool tables in history (Bay of Pigs?), but at least one got the boys of J Hilburn their gig, and they haven’t looked back. One night in 2007, over a fervent sales presentation and a couple of swatches on a pool table, Hil Davis and Veeral Rathod began their custom clothing line with the goal of producing quality clothing and personal service at the cost of, or less than, off-the-rack prices. You can custom design your perfect shirt with fine Italian fabrics, or get fitted for trousers, sweaters, or a number of hand crafted accessories like belts and cufflinks. Bonus: Not in Dallas? Not to worry. You can now shop online and have your clothing shipped to your front door.

Clients include CEO’s, entertainers and NFL stars, and Lombardo himself guarantees you will be the best looking guy in the room with one of his pieces. Lombardo Custom Apparel has now branched out to Atlanta, Philadelphia, Vegas and Washington, D.C., but you can only get this Italian family-style hospitality from the big man himself, and he calls Dallas home.

Q Custom Clothier
The Ratan family-owned workshop has been creating custom-made fine clothing since 1965, and many of the tailors employed at the company’s inception are still crafting garments for Q today. It is in this tradition that the people at Q Clothier continue to serve the Dallas community, providing the highest quality pieces with the most acute attention to detail. A fitting at Q is divided into eight steps, including a thorough investigation into an individual’s lifestyle and fashion preferences, a hand selection from over 3,000 fabrics, ranging from Super 100’s to Lora Piana Super 160’s, and meeting with a design consultant. Finalize your suit with an array of flattering accessories, and you are so on point.

Culwell & Son
Face it: you like to get things done quickly. You’re not about to walk aimlessly around a mall just for the purpose of window shopping, and you’d rather not park that Mercedes more than once in a day. Having your needs in mind, Culwell & Son, a premiere local clothier, decided to put everything into their one location: retail space with custom clothing options, full service barbershop, shoe shine service and a dry cleaners. Meaning you can walk in Oliver Twist, and out Laurence Olivier. Got a nephew in need of some styling, or a wedding to attend? They’ve got you covered there as well.
Culwell and Son is located at 6319 Hillcrest Avenue in Dallas, 214-522-7000
It’s almost the weekend, and with today’s Haute 5 picks of some of the best men’s boutiques that San Francisco has to offer, there is absolutely no excuse for not making grand entrances as the dapperest of dons at any of your VIP parties.
Whether Union Square is your favorite part of town, or the Palo Alto area calls to your luxury fantasies, you’ll be all set at either shopping venue because they are both home to Wilkes Bashford boutiques. In Union Square, the atelier set up shop back in 1966 and quickly went on to establish his name as one synonymous with upscale men’s fashions. Brioni and Ralph Lauren are some of his claims to fame. He rode the wings of success to open a second locale in Palo Alto in 2001, to cater to the Silicon Valley crowd. Late last year, luxury lovers breathed a sigh of relief when a “going out of business” scare was squelched after he reorganized the brand under the Mitchells/Richards/Marshs name.

Naturally we couldn’t mention men’s fashions without bringing up the Brooks Bros. brand, and with a mention of that luxury label, we are drawn to talk about the new Black Fleece by Brooks Bros. boutique. The opening of this brand in our City by the Bay is quite a compliment, considering that this is only their second U.S. outpost, with the other residing on Bleecker Street in NYC. Earlier this month, the luxe store served as the venue for one of the most fashionably attended SF events: a dinner in honor of Jennifer Siebel Newsom and her upcoming film Miss Representation. Brooks Brothers Chairman and CEO Claudio del Vecchio and Black Fleece designer Thom Browne stopped into town for the occasion, where SFLuxe reported that even Mayor Gavin Newsom was quite impressed. “I can say, having been around this town a while, this is a pretty impressive crowd. You got the right folks here!” According to SFLuxe’s reporting, guests at the dinner already decked out in Black Fleece included Geoff Callan in a Black Fleece three-button jacket ($900) and tartan trousers with mother-of-pearl buttons ($400) and Sex and the City’s Jason Lewis in a three-button basketweave suit ($1,600). For more coverage and event photos check out SFLuxe’s full report.

We can think of very few names that evoke imagery of the world of the affluent more so than Hermes. Whether shopping for a fine French silk tie, or leather goods fit for a king, Hermes is one of the it boutiques for men who have achieved certain levels of success and stature. For 2010, the Spring collection delivers “what men want now” with a line chock-full of perfectly cut trousers, with a palette of brown and blue as the ruling hues.
Hermes is located at 125 Grant Ave.; 415.391.7200
If we weren’t breathing a sigh of relief in 2009 that Wilkes Bashford would continue to feed our need for luxury goods, then we were squealing with delight that Paul Smith opened his doors with a 10-year lease on Geary Street. Even Vanity Fair came to town to fete the designer extraordinaire last spring. Smith, whose blog posts appear on Vogue.com, commented on March 6, 2009, the day of the opening:
“I have been visiting San Francisco for many years, in fact since my hippy days in Haight – Ashbury. Although it is a very big city it feels far more intimate and friendly than many, so I am really pleased to be opening my shop here. I have chosen Geary St, which I think is a great location, even though it is not the Union Square end. I instantly fell in love with the building because of its strong 1950’s façade; a strong, graphic piece of architecture. Inside I have tried to make a series of rooms, each with their own character so that visiting the store is a really special experience where you can really discover things, as we will not be selling just clothes and accessories for men and women but books, objects, curiosities and much more. As with all my shops I hope this shop will be like no other, full of its own character and individuality.”
Paul Smith is located at 50 Geary St.; 415 352 3520
If you were headed out to Palo Alto to check in with Wilkes Bashford, might as well make a stop in to say his to his good friend Ralph Lauren. The good news for 2010 is that if you happen to be near the Pacific Heights area and craving some RL, you are in luck. WWD reported that the opening of the new boutique in Pacific Heights “was packed with friends like Vanessa Getty, Alexis Traina, Katie Traina, and Marissa Mayer. But regardless of who was or was not there, the fact still remains that for a sophisticated look that demands respect, very little should come between you and your polo.

Hub Clothing is the go-to place at Scottsdale Fashion Square for men’s casual and sportswear. The original Hub was founded in 1991 by Tom Simon, who coincidentally, did a previous stint at The Clotherie. At Hub, Simon and the team provide menswear with more of a contemporary edge. This is clothing for men who want the latest styles from the today’s trendiest brands, such as Diesel, Raw, and Modern Amusement. And though the fashions here are cutting-edge, don’t expect any skull and crossbones designs or shirts covered in sequins; Hub still believes in its fair share of pieces with timeless cuts and styles.
Hub Clothing is located at 7014 E. Camelback Road (480) 970-0707
As you may assume from the by-line above, I am a woman. When recommending menswear to the legions of male readers (and the women that tolerate them), I’ll readily admit a certain aesthetic bias, if you will. Some women like a man in uniform, some prefer a three-piece suit, and still others prefer a sort of “skater” chic. The following men’s designers and boutiques are not only renowned for their impeccable quality of clothes, but they’re a personal recommendation to the male species inhabiting Los Angeles. Put plainly, if I were dating every last one of the men in this city and I took them all shopping (just one of a woman’s many exhausting jobs), these are the places we’d go.
David August
A custom clothing designer based here in Los Angeles, David August creates a man’s wardrobe based on four distinct and equally important categories: David August Black (hand-tailored garments), David August Couture (a lighter, custom garment), David August Accessories (think ties, pocket squares, and cuff links), and Footware. Every man should own something beautiful from each of these categories, whether they believe in cuff links or not. While dressed in one of David August’s sport coats, you may be tempted to order a martini… shaken, not stirred. Just remember that your business card doesn’t say “James Bond, 007.”

Company: Khosla Ventures
Industry: Technology
What MADE Him Haute: Silicon Valley’s preeminent eco investor—named No. 1 venture capitalist by both Fortune and Forbes—Khosla invested more than $300 million of his personal fortune into start-up green technologies. Khosla was formerly a general partner at Kleiner Perkins and founder of Sun Microsystems. He created venture capital firm Khosla Ventures in 2004 to build businesses for the Internet, and the computing, mobile, silicon, and green technology arenas. In 2009, he announced that the Khosla Fund, one of the largest green tech funds, had raised $1 billion, and in January, luminary Bill Gates became an investor.
What Makes Him Haute Now This year, Khosla was amongst an elite group of six entrepreneurs who received recognition from the UN for their green efforts as “Champions of Earth.” Forbes listed him as one of the 10 Greenest Billionaires, which is apropos: In September 2009, Khosla Ventures announced it had raised $1.1 billion in a “green fund,” to be used to aid in the development of renewable energy and other clean technologies. We can all take a lesson from the carbon-neutral Khosla, who is striving to soon be carbon negative.
