How to Bet on the Kentucky Derby: Trade It!

Why bet on the horses when you can play the stock trades behind the 2010 Kentucky Derby? Higher reward received-to-risk assumed. There are 20 horses competing in the main event and a variety of unpredictable outcomes. However, here are a few major companies benefiting from the Derby awareness that are bound to see stock price action:

1) Brown-Forman (NYSE:BF-B)

The official drink of the 2010 Kentucky Derby is the Mint Julep. The whiskey most commonly used when making mint juleps is Early Times Kentucky Whiskey, a brand owned by Brown Forman. Did you know that Early Times Whiskey was first distilled in 1860? 150 years later, the brand is now a catalyst come Derby time for Brown-Forman.

BF-B: $58.76 per share

BF-B Fundamentals

Market Cap: $8.63 Billion
Forward P/E: 17.75
Trailing P/E: 19.23
Revenue: $16.44 per share
Cash: $1.65 per share
Dividend: 2.1% annually

On a technical basis, BF-B recently tested the 200-day moving average on a 1-year chart of $57 as support. If price support holds at current levels, then buyers could continue to lift the price. The uptrend is still in tact, but be cautious of the tiring $60 level which has not been clearly taken out yet.

2) General Electric (NYSE:GE)

NBC is the exclusive television broadcasting host of the Kentucky Derby. General Electric owns an 80% stake in NBC, with Vivendi owning the other 20%.

GE: $19.49 per share

GE Fundamentals

Market Cap: $208 Billion
Forward P/E: 15.11
Trailing P/E: 21.14
Revenue: $14.54 per share
Cash: $10.42 per share
Dividend: 2.1% annually

On a technical basis, GE is well above its 200-day moving average on a 1-year chart of $17.75.  It is evident there is consolidation/exhaustion occurring at current price levels. Even though the 200-day moving average is rising, you could see a pull back to test the line as history is our witness.

3) Yum! Brands (NYSE:YUM)

YUM is under a 5-year contract for the right to be the Presenting Sponsor of the Kentucky Derby

YUM: $42.77 per share

YUM Fundamentals

Market Cap: $20 Billion
Forward P/E: 15.34
Trailing P/E: 18.94
Revenue: $23.18 per share
Cash: $.95 per share
Dividend: 2% annually

On a technical basis, YUM is trading far off its 200-day moving average on a 1-year chard of $38.40. Since March of this year, the stock is up over a whopping $10. Look for a possible cooling effect here.

For just a few minutes of adrenaline on Saturday, preparation will meet opportunity for jockeys, trainers and the horses. If you’re bets don’t win, just know that you can fall back on trading in the markets where setups are easier to control (i.e. lower risk of sloppy conditions) and YOU are the educated jockey of your own trades!

World Premiere of Moby Dick Tonight at Winspear Opera House

Call me Ishmael. It’s a line well remembered in the minds and hearts of literary types as the first sentence in Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick, the age-old story of Ahab versus the great white whale. Now the tale spun mostly on the high seas premieres in Dallas tonight as the first ever operatic version to hit the stage. The Arts District’s beautiful Winspear Opera House will host the event, now through May 16th.

Jake Heggie, the critically acclaimed composer of the opera Dead Man Walking, proposed the idea of making Moby Dick an opera to producer Jonathan Pell five years ago, who thought there had to be an easier and less expensive project to tackle. But Heggie got his way, so now Dallas will finally get ours. With a libretto by Gene Scheer (An American Tragedy, To Hell and Back), the star-studded cast of Moby-Dick includes the world famous heldentenor Ben Heppner as the vengeful Captain Ahab, Morgan Smith as the sensible Starbuck and Stephen Costello as Greenhorn, as well as a large male chorus. To wind an epic novel down to a three hour opera is no easy feat, but Heggie’s musical compositions and use of the grand themes and layers of the story are suspected to be the best so far in his career.

Although Mobu Dick hardly seems to change scenery much (most of the tale takes place on the ship Pequod), the producers guarantee audiences are in for a visual experience of a lifetime, designed by two-time Tony Award-nominee  Robert Brill and Broadyway vets Jane Greenwood and Donald Holder. Tickets are on sale now at www.dallasopera.org.

Costume Craze: The Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

On Monday night, fashions best and brightest will gather at the annual Costume Institute gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hosted by Oprah Winfrey, Patrick Robinson of the Gap, and Anna Wintour of Vogue, we can hardly wait to see who dresses whom.

If patience isn’t your strongest virtue, we have a sneak peek at the evening’s confirmed designer/model/celebrity pairings.

Stefano Pilati—designer of Yves Saint Laurent—will arrive with January Jones on his arm, while Tommy and Dee Hilfiger will bring Christina Hendricks. Michael Kors is expected to host Brooke Shields, Diane Lane, Carolyn Murphy, Natasha Poly, and Chanel Iman, while Ralph and Ricky Lauren are bringing Taylor Swift, Jessica Biel, and Justin Timberlake. Melania Trump has chosen Christian Siriano to dress her stating, “I wanted to have a fierce dress to wear.”

Gap, who is sponsoring the exhibit, is collaborating with several young designers on eveningwear for the occasion. M.I.A. and Zoë Kravitz are expected to come in Alexander Wang for Gap; Kirsten Dunst and Jamie Bochert are wearing Rodarte for Gap; Kerry Washington and Riley Keough will don Thakoon for Gap; and, finally, Jessica Alba and Vera Farmiga have chosen Sophie Theallet for Gap. If any of these eight dresses suit your taste, Gap will be offering them in a silent auction at gap.com/gownauction from May 4 to 31. Proceeds from the sale of these creations will benefit the Costume Institute, and they can be seen up-close at the Gap pop-up store at 680 Fifth Avenue. If these designer styles are not in your budget, the shop will also be selling special Gap t-shirts inspired by the themes in the Costume Institute exhibit.

The theme for this year’s much anticipated exhibition is American Women: Fashioning a National Identity. Taking a close look at American women from 1890 to 1940, the exhibition will use resources from the newly established Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at the Met. Andrew Bolton is curating with the support of Harold Koda and production designer Nathan Crowley. The exhibition will run from May 5 to August 15.

Sex and the City and Abu Dhabi?

Of all places the Sex and the City girls might choose from to go on vacation, they seemed to find Abu Dhabi the most alluring. The latest movie on Carrie Bradshaw and her Fifth Avenue girl pals features a vacation from New York City to the glamorous city of Abu Dhabi where they trade in the subway for rides on camels, shopping in fancy malls, and wearing turbans. The only thing is that all the Abu Dhabi scenes were filmed in Morocco. Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai Officials banned producers from filming in the country. For those who live in the United Arab Emirates the reason why is pretty obvious- the sex girls can’t tell their tale here.

Even so, with the country’s great investment in the film industry such as bringing in the New York Film Academy, launching the Middle East International Film Festival, and the Circle film financing conference, the decision not to film in the UAE might be a bit of a surprise.

On a positive note, scenes filmed in Morocco where the girls ride camels and go to the market place might actually promote Abu Dhabi tourism. So even if the audience knows that the location is not actually the UAE, the fact that the movie is partially set in this destination might increase interest in the region.

For the New York City gal pals the trip to the Middle East is a chance to spend more time together and as it turns out, it was the longest time the actresses ever had to hang out. The girls are lured to Abu Dhabi by Samantha Jones whose ex-movie star boyfriend is filming an action movie. Carrie finds temptation in the desert when she runs into her own ex- Aidan (John Corbett) from the TV show. Does bumping into a past love in such an exotic part of the world mean something? The girls also struggle with differences pertaining to Western and Eastern perspectives regarding the social behavior of women. Who knows what you will uncover in the desert.

The magic city isn't magical because of rabbits in hats or sawed off corpses; no, the Miami magic happens after the sun sets. And don't be fooled, getting in can be a practice in the art of magic as well; but as long as you're trying, here's where we recommend you spend your efforts. Good luck!
