One Man’s Junk Will Be Another’s Treasure
Seriously, sometimes the most odd items turn out to be of great value. Case and point: A rusted Aston Martin DB5 that has not been in use for more than 20 years. Bonhams in London is putting on the auction block a rusted and un-driveable Aston Martin DB5, you know, like the ones James Bond made famous. In its hay day this piece of rusted steel was a millionaires play toy, probably eliciting oohs and aahs anywhere every time it hit the streets, yet today not so much.
In the 1960s, the Aston Martin DB5 was the must-have luxury automobile. When the model first debuted, it ranged between $4,600-$6,200. Today, its condition may have you thinking its value is in the negatives. And you would be wrong. According to the Bonhams website, this piece of scrap metal beauty is going for $300,000.
Considering that it was found abandoned in a barn, the private owner decided that restoring it would, in fact, be too much and decided to put it up for auction. Apparently, there is a market in finding nearly extinct cars such as this one and restoring it to its original beauty, plus some added details from its new owner. See one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. The cost of rebuilding it will probably end up costing another $300,000.
The coupe has two doors, a four-liter engine, with 282-brake horsepower and top speeds of 145 mph, plus it is part of only 983 of this models that were ever built. Interested in taking on this behemoth project? Then make sure that on April 30 you are at Prince Monaco’s motor museum in Monte Carlo for the auction.
