Here in Miami, Arsht became the first woman to join the Million Dollar Roundtable of United Way of Miami-Dade in 2004, and, in 2008, committed more than $6 million to the University of Miami. WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: While his nightlife ventures may have put him on the map, it was his other businesses (Capponi Group Luxury Properties, Capponi Building Company and Capponi Casa) that caught the fickle attention of Miami’s luxe-seeking crowd. From revamping Miami Executive Airport to major home renovations—including JR and Loren Ridinger’s Casa de Sueños—Capponi is at the center of the city’s entrepreneurial scene, as well as the philanthropic one. Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, he went to the island nation to see what he could do to help and ended up building a proper camp for hundreds of families on a soccer field after collecting donated tents here in the U.S. The whole endeavor took the talented businessman three days and cost less than $5,000. Immediately following the trial, Helio boarded the Penske team jet to California, where he finished seventh in the Long Beach Grand Prix after leading the race for several laps. This was an extraordinary feat for a man who had not trained for nearly seven months. But he soon topped that by winning the pole position at Indianapolis and then the 500 itself—the Golden Grail, motor racing’s biggest and most celebrated event. It wasn’t his first time in the winner’s circle; he also roared across the finish line in first place back-to-back in 2001 and 2002.

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: The A-list actor (named “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2007 by People) settled down in Miami Beach with a former bartender from a South Beach hot spot. The couple has two girls, and Damon is also stepfather to another from his wife’s first marriage, meaning he’s the only male in his household. Maybe that accounts for the action-packed, explosion-riddled flicks he stars in, such as the Bourne series and his latest film, The Green Zone. In addition to being a box-office draw, the Harvard-educated Damon is a liberal activist, philanthropist, and Miami triathlon competitor. He co-founded LivePlanet production company with Ben Affleck in 2000 with the mission of creating media that can be enjoyed across a variety of platforms, and while the company has been “resting” for a bit, in February, it was announced that the two Oscar winners are teaming up again to produce films for Warner Bros.

They are currently developing the Trump Grande Ocean Resort & Residence in Sunny Isles Beach, and Dezer Properties recently took over Related Group’s ownership stake in that project. The family business owns an additional 45 acres in Sunny Isles Beach, which translates to eight additional oceanfront sites that the company can develop. That’s pretty haute.

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: A former taxi cab driver who made it big in the real estate industry, Edelstein’s golden investment is the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall, while his current portfolio includes two world-class buildings on New York’s Central Park West. This 2009 Haute Living Miami cover subject is the principal of Tristar Capital, which joined with developer Aby Rosen’s RFR to open the new W South Beach, which immediately became an epicenter of high-class action. They took their role seriously, with Emilio organizing a halftime show that Gloria performed in. Beyond that, the Estefans are actively involved in the betterment of our community and that of their home country of Cuba, evidenced by the march for Cuban dissidents Gloria led in late March. As of press time, the power couple was preparing to host President Obama at their home during a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee.

He is arguably the biggest advocate for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of South Florida, often buying dozens of wishes at the annual charity dinners. Ferraro purchased the Arena Football League’s New Jersey franchise in 2000 and relocated the team to Las Vegas in December of 2002. Following the 2007 season, Ferraro, along with new business partner Bernie Kosar, another local legend, relocated the Gladiators to Cleveland. COMPANY: Crescent Heights
INDUSTRY: Real Estate

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: As vice president of the industrious and fruitful Crescent Heights, Galbut helped revive residential properties in South Beach with one-of-a-kind construction. It’s a fitting endeavor for him, as his family roots are deeply planted in Miami Beach. In 1935, his grandfather opened a drugstore/diner on 5th Street, and, together, his extended family (which today includes Haute 100 member, Keith Menin, Galbut’s nephew) was at one point the largest landowner on the Beach. Today, Crescent Heights is the nation’s largest residential condominium company with properties across Miami, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and many other cities.

MALCOLM GLAZER

COMPANY: First Allied Corporation
INDUSTRY: Real Estate

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: His entrepreneurial roots can be traced to when he was only eight years old and began working in his father’s watch-parts company. He inherited the business when he was 15, but his young age didn’t hinder the company in the slightest, which Glazer even expanded. He later became the president of property firm First Allied Corporation, which owns shopping centers in 15 states, totalling close to 7 million square feet of retail space. He may reside in Palm Beach, but he focuses a lot of his attention on the Florida’s other coast, because he is the proud owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which brought him Super Bowl glory in 2003. (He has hosted the big game twice as the team’s owner.) In 2005, Glazer paid $1.5 billion to add the world’s most popular and valuable sports team, Manchester United, to his roster. The team brought home the Premier League championship in 2009.

THE GOLDMAN FAMILY
CATEGORY: Originators
COMPANY: Goldman Properties
INDUSTRY: Real Estate

WHAT MAKES THEM HAUTE: Tony Goldman came to a deteriorated South Beach to meet a friend for dinner one night in the early 1980s, and the rest, as they say, is history. Goldman Properties set up shop and transformed the Art Deco district into the thriving haven it is today. He also can be credited with the reinvention of Soho, the resurgence of Philadelphia’s Center City, and, with his son Joey, the revival of Miami’s Wynwood art district. After five years as the associate fashion director for Saks, Jessica joined the family business in 1997 as a principal and managing partner and COO for the hospitality division, overseeing the company’s South Beach hotels. This year, the Goldman’s South Beach property The Hotel created an oceanfront addition at 800 Ocean Drive, right above the News Cafe, in the heart of the neighborhood that wouldn’t be where it is today without the visionary leadership of the Goldman family.

LETICIA & MIKY GRENDENE
CATEGORY: Power Couples
COMPANY: Casa Tua
INDUSTRY: Hospitality

WHAT MAKES THEM HAUTE: The tale of how they met seems as if it was written for a romantic comedy script. (Cruising through South Beach on a Vespa, Italian real estate investor Miky mistook model Leticia for a friend of his and stopped. He quickly realized it wasn’t his friend but was so struck by Leticia’s beauty, he called her modeling agency and set up a fake casting.) Today, the couple serves as commiserate hosts at their boutique hotel and restaurant, Casa Tua. Tucked away on James Avenue, this luxurious Mediterranean-inspired enclave is where other Haute 100 members go to get away from it all.

H. WAYNE HUIZENGA
CATEGORY: Billionaires
COMPANY: Miami Dolphins
INDUSTRY: Sports

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: This Ft. Lauderdale resident is constantly lauded for his business acumen and rightfully so. Beyond that, he is the man responsible for bringing professional baseball to South Florida, when he was awarded the Florida Marlins in 1991. He followed that up by introducing the NHL to South Florida via the Florida Panthers in 1992. For around 15 years, he was also the majority owner of the Miami Dolphins and Dolphin Stadium, making him the only man to have owned all three professional sports teams in a region. JOHN KLUGE

COMPANY: Metromedia
INDUSTRY: Media

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: This 95-year-old Palm Beach resident was ranked as richest man in America in 1989 but lost that title to Bill Gates three years later. That caught the attention of Rupert Murdoch, who purchased Metromedia’s stations in the mid-1980s for around $2 billion. Under the same Metromedia name, Kluge went on to invest in restaurants, technology, and telecommunication ventures, which amassed him quite the impressive fortune. He believes in paying it forward and donated $400 million to Columbia University in 2007, which is the fourth-largest gift of all time to an educational institution.

This served as the centerpiece of a collection of boxes that grew into the largest of its kind in the country. This impressive stature also makes it the largest private gallery in the world. Put it in perspective: this is the same square footage as the White House. So filling the many walls with fine works would seem like a nearly impossible undertaking, yet the gallery is overflowing with the most important Modern, Contemporary and Latin American artists; works by Lam, Kahlo, Rivera, Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall are joined by the world’s largest collection of paintings, drawings, and sculptures by the most celebrated living Latin American artist—Fernando Botero.

Once completed, MAM’s state-of-the-art building in Miami’s waterfront Museum Park will be one of the United State’s most important artistic links to Latin America—a cultural port that imports and exports the visual arts. THE POWERS FAMILY
CATEGORY: Entrepreneurs
COMPANY: Power Play
INDUSTRY: Media

WHAT MAKES THEM HAUTE: Jerry Powers founded Ocean Drive magazine in 1991 and turned it into one of the most successful regional publications in the country. He sold the publication to Greenspun Media Group in 2007 for $30 million and stayed on as publisher. Last year, he resigned from the magazine, as did his wife Sandi, who operated as the fashion director, and daughter Jacquelynn, who was an editor (and has since written for Haute Living). After retiring from Ocean Drive, Jerry tried his hand at a photography studio with the killer name “Power Play,” but pulled the plug after realizing the economy wasn’t what it used to be. Jerry kept himself busy volunteering with Alonzo Mourning’s Overtown Youth Center, working with the kids to put together a not-for-profit magazine over last summer. His philanthropic endeavors carried over into the New Year, when he again partnered with Mourning to host a Haiti benefit during Super Bowl week.

BRETT RATNER
CATEGORY: Thinkers
COMPANY: HSI Productions
INDUSTRY: Film

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: Ratner’s is the ultimate story of local boy gone big-time. As a blockbusting director (and former Haute Living cover subject and also cover photographer), Ratner has racked up a list of films that have grossed more than a billion dollars worldwide, but he never forgets his Miami Beach roots. He made his first entrée into the world of film at age 13 by stalking around the set of Scarface, scoring a cameo as a background extra in the 1983 Brian De Palma film. He has referred to himself as the “Ferris Bueller of Miami Beach,” and his connections led him to be accepted into NYU’s prestigious film school when he was only 16. His paternal grandfather, Lee Ratner, a mega-developer responsible for the naming of Lee County in Southwest Florida, was a close friend of Haute 100 member Al Malnik, who became like a father to Brett. Because of this relationship, Brett can claim some responsibility in the transformation of Miami Beach from a geriatric haven into an international haute spot. When photographer Bruce Weber came to town in 1985 to shoot a Calvin Klein campaign, the Beach was suddenly crawling with models with nothing to do. It was Ratner and Al Malnik’s son Shareef to the rescue, and Malnik’s restaurant The Forge became the go-to haute spot. Brett got on the payroll, earning $500 per week for his efforts turning the restaurant into a must-see on Miami Beach. Today, the Hollywood great continues to turn out blockbusters while also operating Rat Press, a publishing company that is described as “everything that film is not.”

MAYOR TOMAS P. REGALADO

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: Mayor Regalado’s father was a political prisoner in Cuba for 22 years due to his role as president of Cuban Association of Journalists and Reporters, so our current mayor grew up with an eye on politics and a passion for the protection of personal freedom. After he arrived in Miami in his early teens as part of the Peter Pan Project, he followed his father’s footsteps and became a journalist. When his father was freed from Cuban prison, he worked alongside the young Regalado as a producer and news editor at WRHC, the Cadena Azul. Mayor Regalado was the first Cuban American member of the White House Press Corps, and has interviewed Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr., and Bill Clinton. By traveling the globe covering politics, he became interested in the field and was elected Miami City Commissioner in 1996. On November 3, 2009, he was elected Miami’s 33rd mayor with a 72 percent margin.

M. JOHN RICHARD
CATEGORY: Entrepreneurs
COMPANY: Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts
INDUSTRY: Arts

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: The Adrienne Arsht Center’s first year and a half out of the gate were marred by budget shortfalls, empty seats, and negative public perception. Now, only two years later, the Center’s early stumbles seem like a distant memory as patrons pack the seats in record numbers, budget deficits become surpluses, and its programs earn critical acclaim week after week. By all accounts, the Adrienne Arsht Center has completed a 180-degree turnaround. Perhaps more so than any other factor, the Arsht Center’s success has been a product of its leadership. When Richard became CEO in October 2008, he immediately set a tone that the nonprofit organization would be run like a first-rate business, beginning with its management team. A series of bold moves, including the decision to pay off the Center’s remaining bank debt seven years early and a ramped-up commitment to hosting community and educational programs for children and families (despite a poor economy) have all been driven by Richard.

MARC ROBERTS
CATEGORY: Originators
COMPANY: Marc Roberts Companies
INDUSTRY: Real Estate

WHAT MAKES HIM HAUTE: Roberts’ sports management company. Worldwide Entertainment and Sports, was the first of its kind to go public through an IPO, which afforded him the means to become a real estate magnate. Today, he is working on the 30-acre Miami Worldcenter project, which aims to transform a blighted area downtown into a live-work-play environment with retail, restaurant, entertainment, hotel, residential, and commercial components. It’s an ambitious project (to say the least) that entails creating 12 million square feet over the next 20 years. Roberts ran into roadblocks as the bottom fell out of the real estate market, but he is nothing if not tenacious, so we don’t expect this project to go by the wayside like so many others that never left the drawing board.

In 2008, he purchased 50 percent ownership of the Miami Dolphins and the stadium for $550 million, and followed that up in 2009 by becoming 95 percent owner. He immediately made waves that turned the then-named Land Shark Stadium into the host destination for “the best party in South Florida on Sundays,” as he said during an interview for a cover feature in Haute Living. He felt that the ownership base should reflect “the face of South Florida,” so he brought on celebrity minority owners, including Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Marc Anthony, Venus and Serena Williams, Fergie, and others. He partnered with Jimmy Buffett to create the ultimate “Dol-Phan” experience, which resulted in national media attention that caught attention of a new sponsor for the now-named Sun Life Stadium, despite the state of the economy. He then hosted the 2010 Super Bowl during his first season as owner.
