Tribeca Film Festival Announces 2010 Lineup
by Lourdes Reigosa

The Tribeca Film Festival, which will run from April 21 to May 2, recently announced its 2010 lineup of 85 films. As expected, the film festival chose to give their opening-night slot to the highly anticipated film Shrek Forever After, with other notables slated for showcase throughout the festival.

During the festival, the screening of certain films is denoted as a “special event.” The lucky three given special privilege this year are:

  • A restored print of the 1965 classic Russian revolutionary epic Doctor Zhivago, directed by David Lean.
  • A work-in-progress about the famous Eliot Spitzer scandal. The controversial film takes an in-depth look at his epic rise and fall in politics and the subsequent effect on Wall Street.
  • Another work-in-progress titled The Western Front, about Director Zachary Iscol’s tour as a U.S. Marine in Al Anbar, Iraq. Five years after he returned home, Anbar is Iraq’s safest province, and the film explores the true nature and dilemma of war and peace.

Other notable line-ups worth watching include:

  • Last Play at Shea, a buzz-generating documentary about famed musician Billy Joel.
  • Dog Pound, an eye-opening film zooming in on three of the 100,000 children held in detention centers in the U.S., where 60 percent are destined to become repeat offenders. Touching.
  • Buried Land, a narrative about a small town heralding an Earth-shattering discovery that explores the blurry line between fact and fiction and the role of faith in capturing what cannot yet be proven. A film that aims to make you think about “the unknown.”
  • Lola, a film about two men involved in a heinous crime as victim and suspect as their grandmothers see and are affected by it; and Nice Guy Johnny, a dramedy set in New York about a man and his uncle, among many others. This one seems to be an interesting twist on your run-of-the-mill murder/thriller movies.
