Does everything happen for a reason? Well, several college rejection letters have shaped that reasoning in the lives of many. It’s the time of year that high school seniors have been waiting for: college acceptance letters are rolling in, and for some, could make or break the future.
As the letters begin to fill up the mailboxes, pre-college freshman should put on their hard hats and prepare for the worst, as fall 2010 freshman class enrollment numbers will reach a record low, according to the Wall Street Journal. While Ivy League schools like Harvard and Stanford lower their acceptance rates to about 7 percent, more rising high school graduates are left with devastation.
A college rejection, however, doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. Some of the most successful people in the workforce, including Oscar-winning film director, Steven Spielberg, received a rejection letter from their top school. Others, including American investor, Warren Buffett, and Today show host, Meredith Vieira, who also got turned down from their dream school believe the result shaped their careers and provided them with the opportunity to meet the mentors who played pivotal roles in their career successes.
And if all fails, try and try again. Rejected twice from Stanford and Harvard graduate business schools, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, Scott McNealy, kept his eye on the prize as he continued to apply for a chance of acceptance from one of the prestigious schools. Eventually he was accepted into Stanford where he earned his MBA.
What may seem to be a crushing shutdown at the time could turn out to be the alternate road towards success.
Looking to reduce your carbon footprint? An enlightening trip awaits you in Copenhagen, Visby, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm with Destinations in Design, a luxurious travel service taking vacationers beyond the tour bus to cultures around the world emphasizing sustainability.
Today, Scandinavian cities are a world example of integration in sustainability at all levels: from urban planning to development and architecture. This year, Destinations in Design offers a 12-day Scandinavia and beyond voyage aboard the world’s most luxurious cruise ship, Regent Seven Seas Voyager, to experience city centers, churches, museums and galleries where reducing carbon footprints is the primary goal.
Immerse yourself in cities like Copenhagen, which hosted the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2009, Helsinki, named “World Design Capital of 2012,” and Stockholm, with a long history on environmentalism. Points of interest include visiting a carbon-neutral building inspiring green living, learning what Finnish designers are doing in Alvar Aalto’s wake, and exploring Sweden’s new breed of contemporary designers.
“Getting to know the way other cultures build, design and live gives us the opportunity to distance ourselves momentarily from the micro-picture of our specific world,” says Ana Valladares, Destinations in Design president. “Protecting the planet depends on understanding how it works and how other cultures do it right.”

The man behind Maison Martin Margiela has always been a mystery. His refusal to be interviewed or photographed has been the buzz of the fashion industry—even adding to his success and notoriety as a designer. Over recent months, fans have debated whether or not he was even still designing. Those rumors were dispelled, however, when majority stakeholder Renzo Rosso of the Diesel Group confirmed, “Margiela has not been there for a long time.” Well, thanks for that.
Now, local fanatics will have Margiela at their fingertips. Maison Martin Margiela just opened their 19th retail outpost in the Magic City. The shop will carry both menswear and womenwear, as well as accessories, shoes, and eyewear. Housed in a 2,700-square-foot-space in the Design District, the store boasts ornate finishings and furnishings by Margiela’s interiors line. The shoe area is carpeted with hoof prints, a nod to the label’s infamous toe-imprinted shoes. It’s fitting that they chose the Design District as their third home in the States; expect to run elbows with the local tastemakers and gallerists responsible for attracting the high fashion set there in the first place.
To celebrate 150 years of creating uniquely beautiful and spectacular jewelry and watches, Chopard has introduced Animal World, a collection of 150 individual pieces inspired by all pedigree of wildlife. The idea came to co-president and artistic director Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele one sleepless night, and resulted in the imagination of precious dragons, seahorses, monkeys, turtles, polar bears, and other earthly and unearthly beasts.
Grousi-Scheufele told WWD, “I really wanted to make them like little sculptures.” And with that dream, the Animal World collection was born. It took 20,000 hours of work and involved setting more than 250,000 stones to complete. Each piece is built around a different gemstone, and varies in shape and size. They also took to more unexpected stones and materials like quartz, moonstones, red gold, kunzites, pearls, and Paraiba tourmalines to evoke a fantastical feeling to the creatures.
Just a few of our favorite things from this kingdom of animals? The Monkey Pendant features two curious primates, set with brown diamonds, hanging from palms and feasting on red berries. Or there is the Frog Ring in white gold set with emeralds, black and white diamonds, holding a crown featuring an outstanding brilliant-cut yellow diamond entirely surrounded by yellow diamonds. The Storks Earrings are an impressive mix of white and red gold with two briolette-cut kunzites representing the little bundle of joy. Animals have seriously never looked so good.
The collection is comprised of both jewelry and watches, and all are equally astounding pieces of showmanship and design. The expert artisans of Chopard were truly put to the test in bringing these animals to life. Each piece is more luxurious and imaginative than the next.
We all know The Ritz-Carlton’s reputation for bringing its guests the best, which is why it is no surprise that the Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles has decided to tap celebrated chef Wolfgang Puck in the creation of its highly-anticipated restaurant, WP24. The new restaurant, set to open in mid-March, will be located on the 24th floor.
LA’s newest resto will feature refined Asian cuisine, paired ever-so-perfectly with the breathtaking backdrop of the LA skyline. Also joining the team is Chef Lee Hefter, managing partner and executive corporate chef of Puck’s group, and executive chef of WP24 (personally chosen by Hefter and Puck), David McIntyre of Spago Beverly Hills.
“I am thrilled to be partnering with The Ritz-Carlton again and to be a part of the first luxury hotel to open downtown,” says Wolfgang Puck. “Given my longstanding relationship with the city of Los Angeles, it is an honor to continue my involvement with the renaissance of downtown, especially L.A. LIVE.”
The much-sought-after design firm ICRAVE (Geisha House in Los Angeles, Sushi Samba Strip in Las Vegas and Abe & Arthur’s in New York) designed the space where WP24 will come to life. Other than the fine dining we know WP24 will provide, the resto will also feature a wine cave and two private dining rooms.
“We know that WP24 by Wolfgang Puck will provide an extraordinary experience for both our hotel guests, residents, and the local Los Angeles dining community,” said Javier Cano, GM of The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles. “Wolfgang Puck is a culinary pioneer who continues to innovate and captivate diners worldwide.”
Though Ritz-Carlton fans will have to wait until April to be given the opportunity of “hotel guest,” they will be able to have a small taste (pun intended) of what’s to come from their newest locale. The hotel itself will feature 123 guestrooms, and the famous Ritz-Carlton Spa, which will provide a luxurious, 8,000-square-foot sanctuary. The hotel is located at L.A. LIVE, AEG’s glamorous downtown LA sports, residential and entertainment district and is only steps away from iconic landmarks such as the STAPLES Center, Nokia Theatre, and The GRAMMY Museum. We’re practically tingling with excitement.
Joan Lunden, long-time former co-host of ABC’s Good Morning America and activist for women’s wellness, is hosting a weekend filled with adventure and empowerment for the ladies. Reveille on the Road at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain will be taking place from April 15-18.
The special Reveille on the Road package includes all the luxury that the hotel has to offer for the bargain price $1,500 per person at double occupancy or $1,700 at single occupancy. It will literally include everything, from overnight accommodations and fitness classes to a spa treatment (of your choice) and cuisine for the entire weekend (from Thursday evening to Sunday brunch). Oh, all taxes and gratuities are included as well. Talk about a sweet escape.
The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain opened its doors in December of 2008 and has since been deemed the perfect place for new adventurers. With more than 20 miles of hiking trails as mapped by National Geographic Traveler, trail biking through a Saguaro forest, pools, and The Ritz-Carlton Spa and Golf Club all in one place, it wouldn’t have been long before the esteemed co-host and women’s wellness figure discovered (and fell in love with, no doubt) the retreat, which puts the women in touch with nature and all its glory.
In recognition of this and the importance of wellness, the hotel offers some great packages that combine myriad activities with the highest standards of lodging and dining that you’ve come to expect. So, why haven’t you taken advantage of this yet? You never know, you might get more than just a great weekend stay, which will be more than you could have bargained for (in a good way).
