While many of our younger readers may think that the notion of saving the earth was born with Al Gore, Americans have actually been officially celebrating all of the glories that Mother Nature has to offer—even if just one day each year—for 40 years now.
On April 22, 2010, anyone with a conscience (or a fear of PC repercussions) will join together to honor the 40th annual celebration of Earth Day.
While in decades past this may have been thought of as a bash for Birkenstock-lovers, in the 21st century, we have finally wised up enough to realize that a celebration of the earth can go hand-in-hand with the luxury lifestyle (we promise! Check out our weekly orGLAMic posts for confirmation).
If orGLAMic contributor Sandra Sanchez hasn’t convinced you that luxury and sustainability can make for beautiful bed partners, how about this news: Christie’s, the world’s leading art business, will host the fashion community in rallying behind the Green movement. Just check out some of the big brands who are throwing the weight of their name behind the cause:

What MADE Them Haute Tony Goldman came to South Beach to meet a friend for dinner one night in the early 1980s, and the rest, as they say, is history. Goldman Properties set up shop and transformed the Art Deco district into the thriving haven it is today. He also can be credited with the reinvention of Soho, the resurgence of Philadelphia’s Center City, and, with his son Joey, the revival of Miami’s Wynwood art district. Joey’s new restaurant, aptly named Joey’s, is the latest step in Goldman Properties’ formulated plan to transform Wynwood into a thriving live-work-play district. After five years as the associate fashion director for Saks, Jessica joined the family business in 1997 as a principal and managing partner and COO for the hospitality division, overseeing the company’s South Beach hotels.
What Makes Them Haute Now: This year, the Goldman’s South Beach property The Hotel created an oceanfront addition at 800 Ocean Drive, right above the News Cafe, in the heart of the thriving neighborhood that wouldn’t be where it is today without the visionary leadership of the Goldman family. So it’s fitting that on Saturday, May 8, the Miami Light Project will honor Tony Goldman during its annual Friends Dinner. Thanks to Tony’s dedication, and to the grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Miami Light Project has a new home: The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse, in Wynwood. Envisioned as a performance studio that will be shared amongst non-profit art organizations, the Light Box is anticipated to open next January. Individual tickets to the dinner are $150, and host opportunities run from $1,000 to $10,000. For more information, call 305.576.4350.
In our most recent issue of Haute Living Los Angeles, we premiered our “Hollywood Power Players” feature, identifying the who’s who that are running the industry, and thus, keeping their competition running scared. Some of the names that made our list, proving that they are powerful forces to be reckoned with in Hollywood, include Johnny Depp, Ari Emanuel, James Cameron, and Meryl Streep.
From this list, we have developed our Haute Hollywood Awards, highlighting the crème de la crème in categories like actors, actresses, directors, studios, film festivals, and more.
If you have missed these exciting daily announcements, here’s a recap of our winners so far:
- Hautest Actor: Johnny Depp
- Hautest Actress: Meryl Streep
- Hautest Director: James Cameron
- Hautest Agent: Ari Emanuel
- Hautest Film Studio: Warner Bros. Picture Group
Continuing the expansion of this elite circle, today we announce the prize for the Hautest Agency.
And the award goes to…Creative Artist Agency.
This firm, led by six of the most powerful men in Tinseltown (Richard Lovett, Kevin Huvane, Steve Lafferty, Rob Light, Bryan Lourd, and David O’Conner), originally earned a spot in our print edition because, as Editorial Director Stephanie Wilson explains, 18 of the top 40 earners in Hollywood are repped by CAA, including Robert De Niro and Ryan Seacrest, who just returned as prodigal sons after leaving Haute Agent Ari Emanuel.
The awarding of today’s Haute Hollywood honor is somewhat bittersweet. News that Michael Rosenfeld, a CAA founding partner, died on March 25 sombered la la land a bit. He succumbed to respiratory failure in Los Angeles at the age of 75. For those who don’t recognize his name, certainly some of these titles will bring back memories: West Side Story, Mary Poppins, and Rich Man, Poor Man. He was integral in the casting of stars like Rita Moreno and Dick Van Dyke for those films. Other clients who called Rosenfeld their haute agent included Marlo Thomas, Joanne Woodward, Ann-Margret, Eva Marie Saint, and Dyan Cannon.
So while we say congratulations to CAA for winning our Haute Hollywood Award today, we also take a moment to recognize the pioneers who built the legend and power of the city.
The place to be on May 8 is at the annual Friends Dinner, which will take place at the new and uber-trendy Wynwood arts space, The Light Box. Presented by the Miami Light Project, the dinner is honoring chairman and CEO of Goldman Properties, Tony Goldman, the force behind the revamped areas of South Beach in Miami and Soho in New York.
It’s safe to say that everything Goldman touches turns to gold, which is why his latest project—The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse (which also happens to be the venue for the dinner)—is expected to achieve unparalleled and immediate success as a performance studio when it officially opens in January of 2011.
Thanks to Goldman, as well as a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Light Box will enable the Miami Light Project to establish a year-round performance presence in Wynwood, which is currently thriving as a mecca for the visual arts community.
The crème de la crème in attendance at the Friends Dinner will be treated to performances by Miami-based fusion band ¡MAYDAY! and performance troupe Circ X, will nosh on delicious food courtesy of Thierry’s Catering, and will soak up the ambiance as envisioned by Las Tias, a favorite vintage haunt for in-the-know stylistas.
Individual tickets cost $150 and host levels are priced at $1,000-$10,000. For tickets, call 305.576.4350

That delightful time of year known as boating season has arrived. You’ll know when it has too, because the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association will be hosting its 94th annual “Opening Day on the Bay,” marking the official start of the season. Come April 25, 100 of northern California’s yacht clubs will be represented on San Francisco Bay to celebrate.
The year’s theme is, “Building Bridges,” in which both power and sailboats will be competing for the honor of the best decorated boat. These boats will be on display from Crissy Field (west of the Marina Green) to Pier 39 from noon until 3 p.m. In total, there will be about 120 historic workboats, fireboats, vessel assist towboats, classic and contemporary craft decorated to match the theme.
There is a free viewing open to the public that is considered a spectacular family event; however, for those boating enthusiasts who seek something more traditionally nautical, join the PICYA officers, directors and other guests for a light breakfast and gourmet lunch aboard the Californian, one of the largest yachts on the Bay.
This is definitely not the first time PICYA has taken up the task of coordinating opening day. They’ve been hosting the event since 1917, and PICYA itself was formed in 1896 to set a standard for yachting and boat racing. It’s become quite the cultural event to attend, so make your plans and report back here.
A listing that can be considered a collector’s dream: Former Dictator Joseph Stalin’s Parade Car is up for sale on JamesList (where else?). The ZIL ZIS-110 Limousine is modeled after the Packard Super Eight and powered by a six-liter, eight-cylinder engine producing 140 horsepower and a top speed of more than 87 miles per hour.
Stalin’s former automobile was inspired by a gift from beloved president FDR, the Packard, back in the war-torn days of the 20th century. It left such an undeniable impression on the former dictator that he ordered ZIL to copy it. In 1950, it was designated as the communist’s parade car, which is why it has so few miles on it (about 793 miles). It was retired from its post after the dictator’s death in 1953.
It was restored to its original specifications and features by Makela Auto Tuning, a Finnish restoration company of specialists, in 2001. It features a manual shift for those who prefer a nostalgic approach to driving, among many other features. JamesList also displays photo albums with old pictures of the dictator using the car as well as ownership papers certifying the car’s heritage.
That’s not the only haute-worthy item on sale. The virtual luxury marketplace also features sales in yachts and boats, jets and helicopters, watches, motorcycles and many other luxury automobiles. A lot of these items are also available for charter.
Among the many haute items for sale are: the Riva 75 Venere Super Yacht for $4,029,000; the Ducati Superbike 1098 S for a whopping $169,000; a Patek Philippe 5004P watch with a Silver Arabic Dial for $242,000; a Cigarette 50-foot Marauder for $1,232,000; Gulfstream jet for $14,570,000 (with many others with a price upon request); Agusta A109 Power Elite helicopter $3,600,000; and many other custom and classic models well-worth their price tag. JamesList can surely tickle your haute fancy for any luxe item you’d like. Case-and-point: the aforementioned historical item worth way more than just the price.
Whoever claims multi-tasking is a difficult feat is obviously not familiar with fashion impresario Tom Ford. Ford, who left his creative director post at Gucci and YSL in 2004, has since created cosmetics with Estee Lauder, eyewear with Marcolin, and a successful men’s collection in partnership with Ermenegildo Zegna all under his moniker; additionally, he also directed the Oscar-nominated film A Single Man under his production company, Fade to Black.
He has recently revealed, to much fanfare, that he will be launching his much-anticipated womenswear collection possibly in time for Spring 2011, either in Milan or New York. Industry gossip has him assembling a team that includes Caroline Tixier from Givenchy and Pablo Coppola from Alexander McQueen; Ford and his representatives have declined to comment.
In the mean time, Ford fans can satiate themselves with the designer’s newest creations come June 2010 when he debuts his 12-color lipstick collection called Private Blend Lip Color, which will be available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman.
