The process of caring for our hands and feet has developed some particularly luxurious facets in recent years. Thanks largely to technological advancements and the discovery of the benefits of paraffin wax, our manicures and pedicures are more than just a simple buffing of the nail and a polish change. Not merely a way to wash the workweek from your hands and feet, a manicure-pedicure is now a private ritual during which time you are cleansed, scrubbed, massaged, trimmed, warmed, and polished. Lady Macbeth, instead of feverishly washing her hands and yelling, “Out! Out damned spot,” should have just found a tres haute manicurist, like these 5 in Los Angeles.
Bellacures
For the discerning woman whose hands and feet can only take so much wear-and-tear before they require an Intense Moisture Manicure or an Exfoliating Walnut Manicure need look no further than Bellacures on Robertson Blvd. If those sound like amateur hour, why not book yourself a Sea Salt Scrub Manicure, a Microdermabrasion Pedicure, or a Super Duper Pedicure, which all feature amenities that your old manicurist knew not of including walnut scrubs, thick exfoliating crystals that increase circulation, grapeseed oil for moisture, and softening sea salt. Settle into one of the salon’s oversized and incredibly comfortable suede chairs and let your aesthetician take the reins, especially after all your hands have been through!
Bellacures is located at 239 N. Robertson Blvd. in Beverly Hills (310) 550-5822

Take your time before heading back to Robertson where you’ll have to use your hands for such tedious things as getting out your keys, starting your engine, and driving home.
La Vie L’Orange is located at 638 1/2 N. Robertson Blvd. in West Hollywood (310) 289-2501
Thibiant
For those who have been exceptionally abusive to their hands, Thibiant is here to rescue you and your digits. Step into the serene Beverly Hills outpost and find likeminded women who’ve smartly escaped the outside pressure-cooker that is Canon Drive. A manicure here is like a day spa for your hands – choose a classic like a French Manicure or be adventurous with a Tahitian Manicure. Regardless of whichever you decide on, though, their extras don’t feel like time-wasting annoyances that you wish you could skip. This is the kind of hand-and-feet-heaven where hours can pass by without so much as a glance to your BlackBerry. Your feet are similarly well taken care of at Thibiant with similar options – Basic, French, Tahitian. This being Beverly Hills and all, you can also pop into Thibiant for waxing, hair and scalp treatments, hair salon services, and makeup. Talk about getting a swagger before heading out into the scary world of Beverly Hills.
Thibiant is located at 449 N. Canon Drive in Beverly Hills (310) 278-7565
Bliss Spa
With two locations in Los Angeles, there’s really no excuse to let your manicure go. The chipped polish, the untended cuticles, and toes that need to be scrubbed into submission – we’ve all been there before. Bliss Spa takes very good care of you in their signature sleek and cheeky style. Go for an hour-long “Minx” Coat Pedicure alongside the 45-minute long “Minx” Coat Manicure or try a “Head Over Peels” Pedicure with an hour-long “Upper Hand” treatment. Mix, match, enjoy, and repeat. There’s the original LA location in the W Hotel in Westwood and their newest outpost at the recently opened W Hotel in Hollywood and they both offer Bliss’ full nail care menu. That means one thing: doesn’t matter if you’re east or west of the 405, your hands and feet can always be well tended to.
Bliss Spa has two locations in the W Hotel in Westwood and W Hotel in Hollywood. For reservations at both, call (877) 862-5477
Kinara
You need those fingers in peak condition for things like dialing, and subsequently hanging up on, exes and for running through your hair while flirting with new beaus. Your feet are equally important for things like squeezing into dangerously high Louboutins and playing footsie. These are no joking matters, which is why the powers that be at Kinara spa on Robertson Blvd. are so serious about taking good care of your extremities. Their Basic Manicure, for example, is a forty-minute whirlwind experience of nail care. Go further and book a Pure Fiji Manicure & Pedicure, which includes a Coconut Milk Soak, a Coconut Sugar Scrub, Coconut Body Butter, and other antioxidant lotions and potions that will make you smell like a Pina Colada.
Kinara Spa is located at 656 N. Robertson Blvd in Los Angeles (310) 657-9188

Mojo Spa
I almost hate giving up this secret since it is already near impossible to get an appointment, but if you want decadence, Mojo is where you go go. With killer homemade scrubs like the Sugar Daddy, Hot Momma (my personal favorite, a delicious apple cinnamon Shanti Spice Scrub) or the ultimate Diva Deluxe, your nails are in for bliss. Mojo also offers a complimentary Beauty Brunch on Sundays with any package. Pajama Night is the first Friday of the month (boasting free facials and a dessert bar) and has been featured in In Style magazine. The manager, George, is a fantastic diva and will be your next gay best friend. And as if you needed another reason to go, your treatment includes cake or a pastry.
Mojo Spa is located at 1468 North Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago.
Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Chicago
You know this hotel does luxury right and the spa is no exception. The Ultimate Rose is one of their most popular packages and features organic brown sugar and avocado oil scrub, paraffin and shea butter balm infused with Moroccan rose and patchouli oils. Looking to feel revitalized? Try the all-natural blend of pink grapefruit, sweet orange, and ginger. After your spa experience, enjoy a dip in the adjacent pool and whirlpool.
The Spa at the Four Seasons is located at 160 East Pearson St. in Water Tower Place in Chicago.
Spa Nail City
If all you want is a good old fashioned no chip, no fills mani, hit up Spa Nail City. As one of the highest rated salon in the city, the comments here are nothing short of fantastic and consistent—clean, amazing job, and great staff. Plus, a parking lot and a Starbucks next door. What more do you need?
Spa Nail City is located at 4151 W Peterson Ave. in Chicago.

Tiffani Kim Institute
Crackberry syndrome? TKI’s got the cure. The exclusive Blackberry Manicure was created to reduce or eliminate the side effects associated with the excessive text messaging in today’s fast paced, smart phone world. This special treatment helps relieve stiffening of the finger joints due excessive texting or typing. Spa 2.0.
The Tiffani Kim Institute is located at 10 W. Superior St. in Chicago.
The eyes may be the first thing people notice, but the feet are the last. This includes you, Y-chromosomers. They may not be your most appealing feature but feet do count, and now that Spring has sprung it’s definitely time to retire those boot-ready babes…it’s foot-flaunting weather. So before you enjoy that stroll through the Arboretum or commit to that afternoon sandal-shopping at Neiman’s, consider visiting one of the places below for a tootsie tune-up.
V Spa
Nestled inside the Hilton Anatole, V Spa’s luxurious services and amenities make it the No. 1 spot for total toe makeovers. Essential oils of Chinese Jasmine, Indonesian Ginger, Lavender and Mandarin swirl in the warm water, refreshing and rejuvenating the skin. Exfoliating mineral rubs with Micro-algae and vitamins are put on the feet and legs as a mask, followed by a Shiatsu-inspired massage that relieves the tension and melts away all that stress from wearing those too-tall strappy heels (but they look so good on). Top all this off with a warm neck wrap and one of their incredible specialty drinks (included in the 80-minute signature pedicure), and you’ve got the most invigorating below-the-knee experience of your life.
V Spa is located on the second floor in the Verandah Club at the Hilton Anatole, 2201 Stemmons Freeway
Exhale
I work out across the street from Hotel Palomar, which is why I always find myself chasing Sunday morning yoga with an afternoon of pedi/manis at Exhale. I love the decor and the staff, and the G.R.N. pedicure they offer is top notch. A Blue Chamomile wash, Avocado and Almond Scrub and Natural White Tea Spray and lotion are the essential components of the service, but I tend to want to top it off with their RedRock Detox Paraffin wax, a $20-bonus feature that’s totally worth it.
Exhale Spa is located inside Hotel Palomar, 5300 E Mockingbird Ln. at Highway 75
Spa Habitat
If you’re enjoying a day in the West Village, put down those shopping bags and get pampered at Spa Habitat, across the way from the Magnolia Theater. The Organic Foot Ritual begins with a 10-minute foot soak in a hammered copper bowl filled with a bath of cucumbers and rose petals, followed by a hot Basalt stone massage on the legs and foot reflexology that alleviates stress and restores sore muscles. However, if it’s that hot pink polish you’re looking for, you’ll have to search elsewhere—everything is organic at Spa Habitat, from the products to the reclaimed wood floors, so no polish or acetone is allowed.
Spa Habitat is located at the West Village, 3699 Mckinney, #304
Hiatus Spa + Retreat
Aveda has never steered me wrong in the past, which is why I love the hiatus spa + retreat at Inwood Village. Your basic pedicure comes with an aromatic bath, walnut exfoliation and massage, but the best parts are what they call “add-ons.” Choose from five different services, such as a seaweed Caribbean wrap, a Perfecting Plant Peel for skin brightness, or a microderm-like exfoliation process they call Botanical Resurfacing to soften the skin and make it absolutely glow. Hiatus also uses ZOYA nail color, which is a natural, fume- and DBP-free polish that comes in a great variety of spring colors.
hiatus spa + retreat is located at Inwood Village, 5560 W Lovers Lane, Suite 250
Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa
Nothing says old school beautification like Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door spa, pampering the elite for nearly 100 years now, although I’m fairly certain the Plano location is a tad more recent. Living up to its name, the spa offers a series of near-perfect pedicure experiences. There is a Champagne and Rose pedicure (how very Pretty Woman), an Olive Oil pedicure rich in antioxidants, a Citra Spa pedicure, and Healing pedicure, all of which come with a Paraffin wax (my favorite, callouses are so passe.) If you’re on your lunch break try their Timesaver pedicure, which includes a peppermint bath and a toe shape and polish.
Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa is located at 7700 West Northwest Highway
and at The Shops at Willow Bend, 6121 W. Park Blvd. Plano, TX 75093
Summer is fast approaching and if you haven’t already noticed, we can’t wait. But before you throw on the sandals, don’t forget to get your hands and feet into summer-ready shape. Below are our picks for manicures and pedicures that will leave hands and feet looking great and feeling fabulous. Each of these spas offers a unique approach to perk up even the saddest winter fingers and toes.
Jin Soon Hand and Foot Spa
For red carpet and runway worthy nails, you needn’t look further than Jin Soon’s Hand and Foot Spas. Soon’s clients include Sarah Jessica Parker, Hale Berry, Scarlett Johansson, and Brooke Shields. She is sought out by the city’s hottest designers and is uniformly lauded by many a magazine – probably because they all trust her with their editorial shoots. Soon’s salon offers two things that keep her loyal following returning: a fantastic polish job and some serious TLC. All of her employees are trained in her unique method of applying polish and she even has own nail shape, know as the Jin Soon shape. For some soothing relaxation try the Breath of Milk and Honey ($28 mani, $50 pedi). Hands and feet are soaked in warm milk and honey and scrubbed with a sugar exfoliant. To get feet into flip-flop shape, the Spirit of the Beehive pedicure ($60) offers some serious repair for dry cracked skin.
Jin Soon is located at 421 East 73rd St. on the Upper East Side, 23 Jones Street in the West Village and the 56 East 4th St. in the East Village. 212.249.9144
Yes, you may know it as the place where Victoria Beckham gets the Geisha facial (also known as the bird feces facial). However, the Japanese spa also happens to offer a great mani-pedi, no weird animal excretions included. The Nagomi Manicure ($40) and Sakure Pedicure ($60) use organic, natural ingredients. And don’t worry, they’re ones you wouldn’t be afraid to eat like rice, lemons, olive oil, and soy. They also use sake, which happens to be a moisturizer and antioxidant – and even relieve foot perspiration. Who knew? The treatments include exfoliating scrubs, masks, massages, and combined total just less than two hours of total relaxation. So, sake to your feet and get thee to Shizuka.
Shizuka Spa islocated on the sixth floor of 7 West 51st St. 212.644.7400
Spa at the Mandarin Oriental
The Mandarin Oriental’s Touch of Thai Manicure and Pedicure ($90-95 and $140-145 respectively) create a truly holistic mani-pedi experience. The treatments both center on Thai massages to give tired hands and feet some serious revitalizing. This is not a manicure with an extra massage, but a massage with a manicure. At 80 minutes long, if the deeply relaxing pedicure doesn’t leave your feet floating on air, nothing will. Both services also include chroma-therapy readings, to help you pick the perfect color to balance out your chakras, energies, and supernatural spirit. I don’t know if a manicure can actually inspire inner peace, but if there is a manicure than can, I’ll put money on this one.
The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental is located on the 35th floor of 80 Columbus Circle; 212.805.8880
Sweet Lily Natural Nail & Spa Boutique
For a more laid-back atmosphere, we recommend Sweet Lily Spa. Manicures and pedicures are given in comfy pastel-print armchairs and guests are welcome to sip tea or even champagne while they have their nails done. The relaxed spa is also child friendly and even offers a Little Miss Mani for girls 12 and under. Nail art will thrill the little misses and products with all natural ingredients will please mom. The treatments employ yummy ingredients like cucumbers, walnuts, honey, and oranges to leave hands and feet feeling refreshed. For some fuss-free rejuvenation, try the Healing Hands Treatment ($44). The treatment includes nail-buffing but no polish, and uses ingredients like chamomile tea, sea sat, shea butter and calendula oil to leave hands feeling like silk. Sweet Lily’s often introduces new treatments seasonally, so be sure to inquire about them.
Sweet Lily Natural Nail Spa & Boutique is located at 222 West Broadway 212.925.5441
Bliss
Bliss never fails to offer a little fun—and that is a summer must-have. If you’re on the adventurous side, try the “minx” manicure ($55) and pedicure ($85), favored by Beyonce and Blake Lively. A minx manicure is essentially like applying brightly colored, patterned tinfoil to your nails. It is chemical free, doesn’t smell, and needs no drying time. The Golden Cheetah pattern is probably a bit much for most people, but the Hounds-tooth and Fishnet patterns are (relatively) less flashy. And if you can’t pull off gold fingernails quite as well as Beyonce, the pedicures still offer plenty of oomph. If metallic polka-dot toenails still aren’t your style, try Bliss’ Double Chocolate pedicure for a less dramatic treat. Snack on chocolate while your feet soak in hot cocoa and stick to this season’s neutral taupes and beiges for your polish. Warning: your toes will smell like chocolate afterwards.
Bliss’ flagship Soho outpost is located at 568 Broadway. Bliss 49 is located at 541 Lexington Avenue and Bliss 57 is located at 12 West 57th St.
Clinton Kelly from What Not To Wear always says your shoes set the tone for your outfit. With the fair weather now hitting Las Vegas, that means sandals and peep-toed shoes poke their way out of your closet and onto your feet.
While the shoes may set the tone, the pedicure and polish finish the look. Time to head to the spa for a pedi and a fresh coat of paint. Be sure to add one of the season’s hot citrus nail colors such as tart lime or fresh orange, sure to show off your tan. Here’s a look at five spas that make getting a pedicure even more amazing than that place around the corner.
Scream for Ice Cream
Canyon Ranch SpaClub at the Venetian and Palazzo takes your sweet tooth to a whole new level with the Ice Cream Pedicure in strawberry lemonade for April. First they bathe your feet in a moisturizing foot bath that includes a big scoop of soda that fizzes and releases oils, minerals and fragrances into the water to soothe and revitalize feet. Next, your feet get their exfoliating treatment with strawberry kiwi shower sherbet, followed by a mask in a marshmallow foot mask. No treat would be complete without icing, and this one wraps up with strawberry kiwi body icing. Polish and you’re good to go.
The Ice Cream Pedicure cost $95 for Monday through Friday appointments and $100 for Saturday and Sunday appointments.
If you prefer to be your own bartender, so to speak, try the Mixology Series Pedicure that uses organic products. You get to mix and match your own scrubs, butters and oils using certified organic nutrients and essential oils in fragrances such as coconut milk, orange peel and almond blossom. Canyon Ranch even adds a goodie bag to go made up of the remaining product, nail polish and tools used during the service.
The Mixology Series costs $120 weekdays and $125 on the weekend, and is adjusted based on the nutrients, oils, scrubs and butters you choose.
Pedicures last 50 minutes at Canyon Ranch. For appointments, call 702.414.3600 or 877.220.2688.
Pamper Party
Grab a couple of friends and head over to Spa Bellagio for a pamper party complete with the Terra Firma Stone Pedicure. The spa has private rooms, couple’s rooms and even an area set aside for groups, all of which can handle your pedi needs.
The hot stone pedicure uses warm stones that melt away stress and tension between your toes. A rosemary and lavender warming balm finishes the pedi to increase circulation and keep you in that blissful state.
The 75-minute pedicure costs $105. For appointments, call 702.693.7472.
A Girl’s Best Friend
Just a short drive from the casinos of the Strip at Town Square sits Spa Eleven, the outpost of the Delray Beach, Fla., spa from Nicole Oden. A private entrance for VIP guests with an entire room dedicated to treatments makes this one decadent spot. To add to the decadence is the Diamond Pedicure that leaves your tootsies soft and smooth. The pedicure starts with a foot soak, followed by a scrub, mask, moisturizing massage and then a warm paraffin foot treatment. Spa Eleven touts a Hollywood-style pedicure room. The 75-minute treatment goes for $105. For appointments, call 702.967.1100.
Go East
One of Vegas’ newest spas offers a pedicure treatment that is considered one of the highest honors in Eastern cultures. The Chinese Foot Spa at the Spa at Mandarin Oriental within CityCenter lets you soak your feet in your choice of invigorating or relaxing herbal blends while lounging in reclining chairs with views of the Strip. This treatment is a blessing after a long walk on the Strip or a day of shopping. It incorporates massaging moves along reflex points in the feet and lower legs.
When you’re done detoxifying, replenishing or revitalizing, add a Mandarin Oriental Pedicure in the spa inspired by 1930s Shanghai. The foot spas are 25 or 45 minutes, depending on the treatment. The foot spa ranges from $85 to $120, and a pedicure runs $130. For reservations, call 888.881.9530.
A Sip of Wine
Get the full relaxation treatment at Color — A Salon by Michael Boychuck at Caesars Palace with the Chardonnay Pedicure. This 70-minute service comes with a glass of Chardonnay and a moisturizer derived from Chardonnay grape seed extract. Curtains divide the pedicure stations for privacy, or open them all up for an afternoon of treatments with your friends. The Chardonnay Pedicure goes for $145. For reservations, call 1-866-730.7791.
The Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series took place this past Thursday on March 25, 2010. Cielo served as the bold and beautiful location for guests to enjoy the night’s festivities. Guests were pampered with flavorful, specialty Bombay Sapphire Cocktails from 7 till 10 pm. The lavish event benefited Russell Simmons’ Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation and if you recall Mr. Simmons graced our magazine cover not too long ago.
The goal of this foundation is to provide “disadvantaged urban youth with significant arts exposure, access, and education as well as providing exhibition opportunities to early and mid-career artists and artists of color.” The event also highlighted the inspirational works of featured artist, Morgan Blair.
As a prelude to the Sony-Ericsson Open, The Ritz Carlton, Key Biscayne in partnership with Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center, co-hosted an inaugural event with tennis icons Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters, Guillermo Canas, Darren Cahill, and Cliff Drysdale.
An unbelievable 40 athletes arrived that afternoon to compete for the coveted top three-men/women spots that guaranteed playtime with both Roddick and Clijsters in a Round Robin tournament.
After some sweat, serves, and backhands, both players and VIP guests met at the tennis garden’s hard court. The court was converted into an intimate setting where various exhibitions were set up, including the opportunity to return Roddick’s serve or win a point against Clijsters; doubles match with the pros and VIP sponsors; and a fast-paced exhibition with Roddick, Clijsters, and Canas. Drysdale and Cahill were also on the court providing encouragement and commentary.
Following the day’s activities, VIP guests received an exclusive opportunity to ask the tennis superstars various questions. The night ended with attendees enjoying champagne, specialty cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres at the adjacent court, where there was even a harpist playing live music for guests to enjoy.
All proceeds from the event benefited the Greater Miami Tennis and Education Foundation; the organization helps underprivileged kids that show a promising ability for tennis with coaching and programs that allow them to pursue their talent and passion for the sport.
