Luxury Hotel Openings for 2010
by Alison Agudo

If you’re planning a luxury hotel opening for 2010, it’s probably safe to say you’re quite the risk-taker. With the industry struggling through one its worst slumps in decades, there are still some hopeful individuals who are powering through and gearing up for some high-end hotel openings. Here’s a look at the optimistic (brave?) souls who are hoping you come stay with them in 2010.

Of course, this list has to include Donald Trump, the billionaire entrepreneur who almost thrives from risk rather than runs from it. Trump is getting ready to open Trump SoHo, a 931-room hotel in Lower Manhattan which is expected to open this spring.

Former Haute Ambassador Kelly Wearstler is doing double-time as she finishes up the elegant touches of the Viceroy Snowmass in Colorado in addition to the Viceroy Anguilla in the Caribbean.

This spring, fashion icon Giorgio Armani will be opening an incredibly hyped chain of Armani Hotels with the first opening set to be in the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world located in Dubai. Also in the emirate, One & One Resorts will open a new location on the tree-shaped Palm Jumeirah Island.

Over in nearby Abu Dhabi, the Yas Hotel will have 499 rooms and will be covered in a shell of diamond-shaped glass panels. Designed by Asymptote architecture firm in New York, Yas will bridge Abu Dhabi’s new Formula One racetrack.

In Europe, there are numerous hotels set to open in 2010 as well. In Venice, Philippe Starck has designed the modern 26 room Palazzina Grassi which features a 15th-centur façade. The Canal House Hotel in Amsterdam is set to open along the charming old houses on the Keizergracht with canal views, contemporary styling, and 23 rooms.

London will see the new Dean Street Townhouse, a 39 room hotel in what was once the Gargoyle Club. The hotel will feature four-poster beds, hand-painted wallpapers, and other “retro-chic touches.” And finally, in Portugal, the Palacio de Freixo Hotel will occupy the “magnificently restored Baroque palace and former factory.

In the U.S., New York is expecting many new hotels, in addition to Trump SoHo such as the Chatwal on West 44th Street, the Mondrian Hotel in SoHo, the W Downtown with views of the World Trade Center site, Fashion 26 on 26th Street, Eventi in Chelsea, and Nolitan just north of Little Italy.

In Asia, hotels are continuing to be built a record paces. In Thailand, Ritz-Carlton Reserve will open 54 villa resort Phulay Bay in Krabi, and W Hotels plans to open W Retreat Koh Samui nearby. Anantara will be opening the Anatara Kivhavah Villas in the Maldives, and Aman Resorts will open Amanfayun approximately 20 minutes from Hangzhou, China. There are also an incredible three hotels expected to open in 2010 from Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts in Beijing, Guilin, and Shanghai.

In India, Starwood has more than a dozen hotels in the works including three Aloft hotels and the Westin New Delhi Gurgaon.
