Toss-Up for Super Bowl Halftime Entertainment
by Malika Bierstein

The 2010 Super Bowl is less than three months away and the question still remains: who will take the stage for the coveted halftime show? There has been speculation as to whether new co-owners Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, and Gloria Estefan—and possible new partner Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas—will spice up the stage with some Latin-infused hip-shaking or some hip hop flair. On the other end of the musical spectrum, Sports Illustrated is reporting that English rock band The Who is confirmed for the slot, featuring original members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, who haven’t performed in North America since 2008. Bon Jovi is reportedly also in the mix.

Past halftime performers include Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, P. Diddy, Kid Rock, U2 and Sting, among others. Gloria Estefan has appeared in six Super Bowls herself, with a possible number seven on the horizon.

No word on why the NFL is being so hush-hush about the decision, though a spokeswoman for the league’s headquarters in New York stated that it’s simply because they don’t have anything to announce yet. Who knows, perhaps with the economy still in a sling and numerous seats still left to be filled on game day, the problem may be a lack of commitment from any one party. If all else fails they can always try to get Justin and Janet back. After all, a performance from them is sure to boost ratings and spice up the stage. Just make sure your kids aren’t watching.
