John Hardy Jewelry Benefits Breast Cancer at Saks
by Malika Bierstein
National Breast Cancer Awareness month may be over, but the support is still going strong in Miami. John Hardy creative director and head designer, Guy Bedarida, was on hand at Saks Fifth Avenue at the Dadeland Mall on November 12, showcasing his Fall 2009 jewelry line and signing all unique purchases of his designs in the name of charity.
The collection, which is indicative of the stand the company took against global warming a few years ago by choosing to minimize its economic footprint, featured Balinese-inspired hand-woven silver designs made from bamboo, depicting bamboo saplings and leaf shoots. In an effort to become a carbon neutral company, John Hardy offsets the carbon emissions of its advertising, business travel and electricity by planting bamboo on Nusa Penida, a small island off the coast of Bali.
“We have vowed to make our company greener every day,” said CEO Damien Dernoncourt. “The Bamboo collection is a way for collectors of John Hardy jewelry to participate in one of our efforts to contribute to the environment. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of each piece is set aside for planting bamboos. We call this program Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo.”
Five percent of the event’s sales were donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Affiliate, an organization dedicating to raising awareness about breast cancer and empowering people in an effort to eliminate the deadly disease.
