Haute List: Best Caviar Retailers
by Alison Agudo

Enjoying the finer things in life is something we at Haute Living not only personally enjoy, but we also love to share suggestions with our readers. With the holiday’s fast approaching, here is a quick guide to some of the best caviar retailers in the world in case you’re looking for a gift for someone special, even if that special someone is yourself.

We begin the guide in Geneva, Switzerland with the Caviar House & Prunier. As one of the world’s largest importers and distributors of fine caviar from the Caspian Sea, Caviar House & Prunier is known for supplying caviar royal families throughout Europe. With offerings of nothing short of the highest quality, the caviar distributor produces signature dishes such as the “Tsarina”, which consists of some of the world’s finest caviar elegantly served with smoked salmon and toasted blinis and caviar shots served with vodka and champagne. Caviar House & Prunier has multiple locations including London, Paris, Geneva, and Dubai as well as several seafood bars that feature a great selection of Prunier caviar as well as other seafood such as smoked salmon and sushi. These seafood bars are located at airports such as JFK in New York, London’s Heathrow Airport, Scotland’s Newcastle Airport, Sydney Airport, Geneva International, and Hong Kong International.

Next up is Caviar Russe which is known as being the supplier of fine Caspian Sea caviar to some of America’s top chefs and restaurants for the past fifteen years. In 1996, Caviar Russe opened a restaurant and a retail boutique on New York’s infamous Madison Avenue as part of an effort to expand its brand and reach consumers through direct retails. Caviar Russe specializes in roe, including the bold, nutty Osetra, and the rich, intense Sevruga. In addition to their caviar, Caviar Russe also offers accompaniments such as quail eggs, profiteroles, and plugra butter along with a vast selection of rare vintage champagnes and a comprehensive vodka list. The company also offers online access to its products with a wide selection of caviar sold by the ounce and pound in addition to smoked salmon, fois gras and game being sold on their website.

Tsar Nicoulai Caviar was founded in 1978 by husband-and-wife entrepreneurs, Mats and Dafne Engstrom.  The company raises its fish in Northern California and with the help of researchers at the University of California Davis, Tsar Nicoulai has developed a “proprietary tank-farming system” to raise its fish which creates a mineral-rich environment free of mercury, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals. In 2004, the Tsar Nicoulai Caviar Café opened in San Francisco as a complement to the booming company’s delivery business. Celebrity chefs such as Wolfgang Puck in Los Angeles and Charlie Palmer in New York frequently obtain their caviar supplies from Tsar Nicoulai.

Caviarteria is a caviar retailer with a modern twist.  The company has streamlined itself into a completely virtual operation offering a wide range of Iranian caviar, including Sevruga, Osetra, and Golden Imperial, in addition to roe from Russia, Bulgaria, and the United States. The online caviar house also offers a fine selection of foie gras, smoked salmon, salmon tenderloin “czar cut”, smoked trout, gravlax, and smoke sturgeon. Due to popular demand, Caviarteria has announced that it will be bringing back its unique three layer smoked salmon and caviar cake.

Petrossian was founded in 1984 by two brothers and has since then grown to be one of the largest buyers and importers of Russian caviar worldwide. The company insists that members of the Petrossian family personally choose the best of every Russian caviar catch for their clients, and offers delivery in addition to the Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and New York restaurant locations.
