Bergdorf Goodman to Tribute Alice in Wonderland Author
by Jillian Lobato

Bergdorf Goodman’s Holiday Windows, one of New York City’s premier seasonal delights, will debut on November 20th for a limited time, ending on January 6th.  The theme of this year’s windows, “Curiouser and Curiouser” is inspired by the imaginative works of Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass (just in time for the hype of the release of the Alice in Wonderland movie starring Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway). Bergdorf’s Senior Director of Visual Presentation David Hoey and his team of artists are working behind the scenes to create a traffic-stopping visual fantasy for the Bergdorf Goodman store windows on Fifth Avenue and 58th Streets in New York City.

The “Curiouser and Curiouser” windows will be created using specific materials and themes that will represent a psychedelic-Victorian take on scenes and characters portrayed in Carroll’s works. In typical Bergdorf style, each window will be filled with little objects and obsessive details.

An all-mirror window will adorn a floor-to-ceiling Venetian mirror featuring a girl trying to enter a large fire place as portrayed in Through the Looking Glass. A window featuring a library made out of paper will inhabit paper animals such as a cat, flamingo, turtle and a lizard, all taken from Carroll’s fantasies.  An interpretation of a game room with a regal theme will house a birds-eye-view of a chess game and will feature a King and Queen playing with over-sized chess pieces.  The window will be filled with playing cards, a vintage roulette wheel, and several games such as mahjong and backgammon.  Another Victorian themed window will depict a tree house surrounded by a forest of roses and a girl sitting on a tree branch playing with a Cheshire cat.  The all-wood, ‘Drink Me’ window, inspired by Alice in Wonderland, will be the most fanatically detail-focused window, filled with an excess of staircases ranging from full-scale to tiny. The window will contain hundreds of staircases, all connecting into little doorways and rooms and will feature a full-size mannequin with a miniature girl who holds the key to one of the doorways. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

The holiday season would not be complete without a stroll down Fifth Avenue to view Bergdorf’s famed windows.  The store is conveniently open Monday-Sunday from 10am – 8pm and is located at the corner of 5th Avenue and 58th Street. The holiday windows will remain on display through January 6, 2010 and can be enjoyed by everyone on the Bergdorf Goodman web site as well as on the Bergdorf Goodman Facebook fan page.
