Beijing’s Seven Star Dragon
by Alison Agudo
Beijing’s latest opulent showpiece is the Pangu 7 Star Hotel which is part of the larger Pangu Plaza development all of which is shaped like a giant dragon guarding the historical axis that connects the Forbidden City to the 2008 Olympic Park.
The Pangu 7 Star Hotel is truly mindboggling in regards to both its size and its concept. Celebrated Taiwanese architect, C.Y. Lee, was roped in to take over the project, and the results are nothing short of stunning.
Fengshui played a large role in the design and location of the Pangu 7 Star Hotel and the Pangu Plaza in general. The “yang” element of the dragon design featured in the development is said to perfectly complement the “yin” of the Dragon Lake in the neighboring National Forest Park.
The dragon theme runs elegantly throughout the hotel’s facade and interiors including motifs in the yellow carpets and sculpted armchairs in the lobby, as well as carefully selected lampshades that are found in the 234 rooms and suites. Each room is fitted with giant flat screen TV’s, Bose surround sound systems, and Ferre and Hermes bath products—what else would you expect from a seven start property?
One room in particular stands out from the rest, and that is, of course, the Sky Courtyard located on the 23rd floor of the Pangu Plaza. The room features a traditional Chinese courtyard living with exclusive access to the room via private elevator. There is also a rooftop garden, wading pool, and electronically retractable glass roof. Simply delightful.
