The Empire State Building’s Elegant Empire Room
by Alison Agudo

After completing a $550 million building-wide renovation project, the Empire State Building is welcoming a more night-time friendly addition to its historical base.

A new, and expectedly swank, cocktail lounge and bar is under construction in the ground floor of the Empire State Building’s newly renovated lush lobby, taking the place of a former 3,500 square foot post office.

If all goes according to plan, the Art-Deco inspired Empire Room lounge is scheduled to open by the end of November and will feature an elegant design scheme by renowned design firm Goodman Charlton who are incorporating plush mohair, cut velvets, macassar ebony, silver leaf, embossed leather, marble, and polish stainless steel in hopes of creating a sophisticated impression reminiscent of supper clubs and gentleman’s lounges.

The Empire Room lounge is a true labor of love for Mark Grossich, the nightlife entrepreneur and lounge mastermind who can be credited for elegant establishments such as the Campbell Apartment in Grand Central Station. Mr. Grossich adds historic significance to city nightlife in a way that no one else can even touch—allowing New York’s historic buildings to come alive as the sun goes down.
