Luxury Brand Chanel Reopens in San Francisco
by Lianamar Dávila Sanabria
On November 19, the Chanel Boutique at 155 Maiden Lane is scheduled to reopen after extensive interior and exterior renovations. President and CEO of Chanel Inc. John Galantic said, “Chanel has been a part of the San Francisco community since first opening in 1988.” The three-story, 7,900-square-foot structure has entrances on Maiden Lane and Geary Street and houses ready-to-wear, handbags, costume jewelry, shoes, watches, and fragrance and beauty.
The San Francisco store’s transformation was spearheaded by New York architect and long-time collaborator Peter Marino, who was specifically enlisted by Chanel for the re-design. He created an inventive, yet familiar, expression of the Chanel legacy through adapting the brand’s icons, such as all the white heightening the sense of detail and craftsmanship for which Chanel is known. Upon entering from either street entrance, the centerpiece of the boutique is a 25-foot tall glass feature wall, made from black metal and glass with sheer gold laser-cut fabric and white lacquer multi-level suspended shelves, lining the stairs to the second floor.
The dazzling Cruise 2009-10 Collection, which was a sensation at the runway show at the Lido Beach Club in Venice in May 2009, will debut the space. Galantic added, “This market continues to be highly influential and important to Chanel. The redesigned Maiden Lane Boutique is now one of the most beautiful Chanel Boutiques in the world and we are proud to reopen here in San Francisco.”
In honor of this long-awaited, grand reopening, two looks from the Cruise Runway, including a special handbag and shoe, will be available exclusively in the San Francisco boutique. Chanel in San Francisco will serve as the backdrop for Karl Lagerfield’s new vision for a Chanel Boutique as he reinvents the French fashion house’s new silhouettes, colors, and materials each season.
